Yaaay,I just came home and put my new 2 1GB RAM bars into my machine and fired up the good old BF2...and tada - no more jerkyness,no more flickering of the HD light all the time,it's a difference like night and day!!

Seems I'm gonna play around a bit with the settings, going from medium geometry to high didn't cost any performance, and with 256MB AGP aperture size I even might turn up some other stuff like the effects..

Sorry for the kinda useless post but I'm kinda happy that the times of waiting 3 minutes till the client data is veryfied, starting the round when everybody else is already at the 3rd flag, shooting down everybody until the friggin' hardware lag lets you crash, etc.,are finally gone!!

Cool, hopefully when i get my new lappie back from repairs (it was DOA) i'll see the benefits too I currently have to wait about a minute after the map loads so that the remaining textures are loaded from the HDD...

What did you upgrade from? 1GB?

I know what you mean about night and day difference. When I went to 2GB, it cut my verifying client data time in half.

Though I had 4x512mb sticks, and one stick was an odd-ball and it flat out sucked, so I removed it, giving me 1.5 GB... and that made it even faster.

Dude, ya got me going now.  My new PC should be up by the weekend.  New motherboard, power supply, Grafix card, and 2gb or ram.  I was assured that I'll be able to run everything on high settings.  Which should be night and day vs the old low setting dinosaur that I've been using since BF2 came out.  Here's to good gaming.

Just did the same thing - new everything, mobo, cards, ram, cpu all brand new, replacing my old dell....you will see a big difference in your scores....i used to get fragged all the time during a jerk/laggy session...would happen 5 times a game, especially when the art. is falling!  so much more fun with the right machine!!!!

No doubt.  I swear that I'm going through withdrawl, lol.  Been two weeks since I had the stuff ordered.   I did have very good scores per round, but I knew it was getting close to a new setup.  I got sick of having guys shoot me while dropping off of ledges, only to see them laying on the ground once I died.  I had major lag on every new map for about a minute until the system could catch up.  The new one should be sweet.

2 gigs ftw.  Anyone ever played with anyone wth 4 gigs?

Some dude from a buddies clan was an uber nerd and had 4 gigs and capped the 2 heli flags on ghost town before anyone else even loaded.

So you have 2 gigs now,  what did you have before?  What kind of system?

Athlon 64 3000+
GF 6600GT 128 MB AGP

At first I had only 512 MB because my old comp totally crashed and I needed to upgrade anyways, and the money was just enough for a new mainboard, new processor, new graphic card and only one RAM bar.

BF2 was practically unplayable with 512MB for me,I couldn't move around without hyperlagging, got killed dozens of time while testing my settings and horribly lagging.
Then I got an extra RAM bar and it was ok with 1gig,except that the first round was still unplayable for 3 minutes and frequent jerkyness ingame.Very annoying, especially while flying.

Now with 2GB it's great, loading times are down two 2 minutes max and no jerkyness ingame at all.
My settings now are:
Terrain medium
Geometry high
Lighting medium
Dynamic Lighting low
Dynamic Shadows low
Effects medium
Textures medium
Texture filtering off
AA off
View Distance 100%
1024x768@75Hz

Considering my machine the settings are quite ok,and I think there's still some performance in it,maybe to turn the effects to high.
