I have wireless and the speed is 54 Mbits a second. im goona upgrade it to 125mbits. I don't know if i have to. when i play it goes fine but when i come in contact with another player in the server it say problem with connection and i end up dying. what should i do???

Have you stopped to think, that unless you have an internet connection faster then 54mbps, you wont need faster wireless? And have you stopped to think that it may be your PC causing you to lose connection?
I found that on my PC if I run everything at minimum (draw distance at max, 1024*768) I get quite a few less ping spikes. Might work in your case also..

you think thats bad i use to be on 4000 kbps direct into my pc via ethernet, now i had to move out and stuck at my parents with a shitty wireless connection
i say play while connected with a cable to the router/modem. playing with wireless in my opinion is asking for trouble
Why would you want 125Mbps when your ISP can't go over 10Mbps (that's if it's cable or DSL).

What exactly are you trying to do with your connection? Share ISOs across your LAN? Then I agree, 54mbps is too slow, but if you're doing anything on the 'net, then 54 is plenty.Avarice wrote:

As for your problem finding a channel, I'd suggest this program - network stumbler (here). That will allow you to see all the area's wireless networks, no matter how weak, and what channel they are on. Then just find a vacant channel.
Also, if you have a WRT54G/GS/etc, I'd recommend getting a new firmware. I use DD-WRT personally and I can boost the signal strength from 28mW to 100mW without any loss of signal fidelity.
There are a bunch of things in line that could be causing this and it's more than likely not the speed of your connection. First, are both your router and card 54 mbps? How does the wireless NIC interface with your computer (ie. usb, pci, pc-card, etc)? How old is your router and what brand is it? Is it in an area near (believe it or not, from personal experience) or is a microwave between the router and your computer?.-^Jackabo^-. wrote:

To answer the questions, if it's connected by USB, make sure it's secure, PCI make sure it's completely seated, etc. If your router is old, they can go. I've had one get really flakey at the end of it's life and would randomly drop connections or sometimes you couldn't reach DNS servers through it or other computers on the network, none of which was reproducable, it'd just stop. If there's a microwave nearby or between you and the router, that could interfere with the signal, especially if the microwave is old.
Lastly, if I were you, I'd go to the manufacturer's website of your router, follow the firmware updating procedure listed (usually involves a hard-reset of your router, then upgrade, then another hard-reset, then reconfigure) and update to the newest firmware. I know that's solved some problems for me in the past.
Lastly - I wouldn't get anything faster than 54 mbps (aka Wireless-G) until the final specs of the Wireless-N are agreed apon. Don't buy into any of this Pre-N hype. No one can agree on anything right now. You'd hate to plop down a couple hundred bucks (with router and new cards all around) only to end up with the wireless equivalent to a betamax. If you REALLY need the speed, go and buy a 50-100 ft ethernet cable or a do-it-yourself cable kit and run one to your computer. You'd be better off at this point.

54Mbits/s is the maximum speed it can handle, making it faster, unless you got a faster connection (what the provider allows), is useless.
unless you mean new hardware, then i recommend googling for finding info on what wireless router fits best with the card you got, or the other way around.....
it could also be to high settings ingame..... but that doesn't happens to often.
Before saying your wireless doesn't work, did you at least test it?

Drepamig, have you got msn? I'll talk to you on there and see if you can help me. Basically I've got a belkin 802.11g and there are two computers running off the network. The other problem that we have is that if my computer is onnected, the other computer cant connect...

Yes, I plugged in the wire recently, and I'm lag free, it's defo the wireless.
Gosh, sometimes my wireless just shuts down for a few days... it goes when it pleases, then I pluggted up to the cable and it was over, definately the wireless, only usefull for surfing the new, not gameplay.

Who's your ISP in order to get that kind of speed? Some college campus? Because if it is, I know what college I'm going to transfer to....
Back to the wireless thing - I'm not sure if it's just my luck (which I don't have) or what, but I've gamed on both wired and wireless connections and haven't really noticed any difference when I had good signal strength. A friend of mine is connected wirelessly to his router on the same ISP as I am and (with comparable computers) ping essentially the same. I know early on there was a lot left to be desired with wireless connections (both for networks and for keyboards/mice) but it's gotten much much better as of late. But, as with anything, YMMV.
For those of you experiencing so many outages with your wireless connections, I wouldn't be so quick to blame the technology. I'm sure if you bought an "expensive" router that has a solid firmware behind it and placed it in a good location, you wouldn't have any problems. I can't recall the last time I've had a random outage that isn't something that's my fault.

Its Mbps.....or Megabits. All internet connections run bits, not bytes. My company offers fiber connections to some neighborhoods. They are working on expanding it to try to reach everyone, but we only offer it in specific areas right now. Fiber rules. More expensive definately, but the connections and download speeds are much greater. Not to mention, your upload speeds are alot higher, which makes for better game playdrepamig wrote:

I had the same problem a few months ago. I did ALOT of searching numerous boards looking to see what the problem was. I had a wireless router...and my pings were constantly thru the roof. After gathering info, and talking to rl friends, I took the wireless back, bought a broadband...and everything is fine now.

But it may get complicated....
Just to make sure we're all on the same page. When I talk about a wireless connection, I'm talking about the first step on your way to the net. IE Your Computer -> wireless to a router within your residence -> modem -> WAN. I have no experience with, say, community wide wireless connections, but I would imagine they are slower due to the complexity of it all.
