Yup....
they're integrated with Asus mobo's.
Has anybody else had a problem with them or what?
It stops giving sound in the middle of BF2 and just quits after a while.
I stopped using it maybe a year ago and replaced it with my old SantaCruz card though I have a friend who's dead set on using the chipset.
As far as I know, it's not a driver problem nor anything else; I'd say it's just the chip.
Anybody know a fix?

I have an A8N sli Premium.  The only sound problem I have is in AF flying planes.  It seems to get really garbled.  Hoping to fix that with an X-Fi Extreme.

Integrated will always be lacking.  One major drawback is ... they're integrated.  If you ever have any problems, there's no solving it, you just have to replace it.  An X-Fi should replace it nicely.

Yep, Realtek AC 97' chips real %"#ยค with Bf, basically also tried all settings, drivers, customized drivers, blah blah. nothing, although might not cheer much but better just buy those cheap sound blaster cards and save alot of nights trying to make it work :I

X-Fi's have a hefty pricetag...
I have my AC 97' disabled but with my current sound card, my sampling rate is at a low to decent range.

Using onboard sound raises your CPU overhead.  If you game much at all, I'd recommend a soundcard so you can free up CPU cycles for more gaming goodness.  X-fi is overkill IMHO.  Audigy will suit you fine unless you really need all that Xtra shit (most of which is not gaming related anyway).

I don't have any problems with my Realtek AC 97 on my MSI board (2 years old). I have considered buying a real sound card, but I have doubts as to whether the increased cpu capacity weighs up to the soundcard's price tag.

I use the onboard sound on my Asus board andI know where ShotYourSix is coming from. He get's better graphics performance than I do with a similar card.

Plus, since updating my BIOS I don't always get all the sounds. I'll be sitting in a tank, the tank rocks, health bar goes down, no sound of impact. WTF?

Think I'll try a driver update first, then buy a separate sound card.

I get that problem sometimes.....usually on a 64 server and I have an Audigy Z something or other seperate sound card??

Or is it that I have inadvertantly set something to use a surround sound system, and headphones aren't???

Sounds more like the BF2 sound bug (where weapon/impact sounds often dont play, and is common across many different hardware configurations) than a hardware/BIOS issue.  I get this myself from time to time as well as many other users.  Are you getting this in other games or just BF2?

I don't think anyone would say it's a problem to use onboard sound.  As far as FPS goes, you are right. the FPS gain is quite small and not enough to justify the price of the card in itself.

Where the card does justify itself is in the quality of sound (digital signal processing vs. codec on an onboard), and higher, cleaner volume output as well as a larger number effects and sound channels.  Most games today support EAX and having an EAX enabled game in combination with a Creative sound card will add many additional sounds in the game that you do not get with an onboard sound chip.

Nothing wrong with onboard sound though, it's really improved in the last several years.  On the other hand, an Audigy 2 ZS can be had for as little as 49.00 now so it's not so hard to swallow as when it was selling for 150.00.

I only really play BF2, some of us have to work as well

I'll leave well alone for now then.

Thanks for the advice.

Mines fine, I run high sound on it.

lol
I'd say it was a BF inclusive problem as everything else did work except for BF2 in which the sound would abruptly die in the middle of the game. It's especially a bitch when ur trying ot hide from a heli since you can no longer hear the rotor.
It did however drop my fps by around 10 on high sound though I was running 5.1 with EAX.
Could just be me as I overclocked my rig a bunch.

From www.tweakguides.com BF2 guide:

Overclocking: Battlefield 2 is sensitive to overclocking. If you've overclocked any components on your system and are having problems such as crashes, reboots and graphical anomalies, the first thing to do is set everything back to default speeds and try running the game. If you don't experience the same problems at default speed, or they're reduced in severity, then your overclock is the primary culprit. Either permanently reduce your overclock and/or increase cooling to regain stability. Don't assume that because other games run with stability at a particular speed that BF2 will do the same.

*sigh* I'm  hate EA/DICE even more now though I'm definately not killing my overclock on my rig.

Wow, I thought it was just something going on in my system.  I had recently installed the drivers for the integrated audio on motherboard, which is a fairly high-end solution as far as integrated goes.  I did this so I could access the front headphone/mic jacks.

Recently I noted an odd happening in SF that hadn't happened before.  I would be playing, then all of a sudden the sound would be gone.  I came to find out that for some strange reason the software volume control was being turned all the way down.  If I alt+Tab out of the game I can turn it back up and sound is back.  Thinking this was a driver problem I removed the driver, disabled the onboard audio and installed my Fortismo III again.  Funny thing is, the same problem happened yet again.  At this point I'm at a bit of a loss as to why this is happening now.

Hmm... so the sound's turned all the way down?
I've actually never bothered to check.
I'd say it's some SF sound bug Dung_ Bomb.
Maybe BF2/SF doesn't support the soundcards even though that's most likely not true.
Eh. I don't think you need drivers to access front headphone/mic jacks; you need to connect all the plugs/maybe set some dip switchs and it should work.(the front jacks did work on my rig)

Sounds like a 3rd party program is overriding your Control Panel settings.  I know that in the Creative software settings there is a checkbox setting for "synchronize with control panel".  This option has caused problems in other games for me in the past.

You should open the settings panel for any 3rd party sound related apps you might have running and look for any such options.  Disabling that may solve your problem.

Pretty much a wild assed guess here but that is the best I can come up with.

What I meant is that he may have another app running (similar to creative CP) such as the one for HIS soundcard that may be causing this problem.
