Heh, it's just after 7am here and I'm already drinking my 3rd beer. I feel GREAT!

Mine used to rarely quit doing sound also, then I updated the drivers and it stopped doing that. Of course I use a sound card now and will never willingly go back to using integrated.
Sosund cards are typically always better than integrated.
I find accasionally the sound does strange stuff.
And often the older drivers are the only ones that will work.
Sulotion is to get a real soundcard. Takes some load off you CPU and RAM too.

The volume control utility for my sound card also ties to the Windows volume control. If I open both of them and move the volume slider, they will both move simultaneously. Like I said, it's really odd that this just started, since I have played BF2 and BF2: SF since the last patch and never had this happen. It started with the integrated audio, but still occurs even though I uninstalled the drivers and disabled it in the BIOS, and am now back to my Hercules card; I was running the latest drivers for both.ShotYourSix wrote:
Sounds like a 3rd party program is overriding your Control Panel settings. I know that in the Creative software settings there is a checkbox setting for "synchronize with control panel". This option has caused problems in other games for me in the past.Agent_Dung_Bomb wrote:
Recently I noted an odd happening in SF that hadn't happened before. I would be playing, then all of a sudden the sound would be gone. I came to find out that for some strange reason the software volume control was being turned all the way down. If I alt+Tab out of the game I can turn it back up and sound is back. Thinking this was a driver problem I removed the driver, disabled the onboard audio and installed my Fortismo III again. Funny thing is, the same problem happened yet again. At this point I'm at a bit of a loss as to why this is happening now.
You should open the settings panel for any 3rd party sound related apps you might have running and look for any such options. Disabling that may solve your problem.
Pretty much a wild assed guess here but that is the best I can come up with.
As for the front ports, what I meant is that I had a Hercules Fortisimo III sound card, but I can't use the front ports because there is no way to link them to the sound card. I removed the sound card and enabled the onboard audio so I could attach the front panel ports.
The one thing I did notice last night while looking at the audio settings of BF2 and BF2: SF is that the EAX option is selected. I think they supported the earlier EAX versions, but not the newer ones, especially like the X-Fi. I may try disabling that and see what happens.
Ultimately I may end up saving only my keyboard config files, and then wiping both games and reinstalling them.
:\
Sound advice (no pun intended) that I think I might have to follow.BigglesPiP wrote:

Cheers.
many mobo's use AC-97 and it ain't that good your better off with a cheap soundcard rather than onboard
Just ordered one today for my birthday. Cant waitpuckmercury wrote:
An X-Fi should replace it nicely.
lol I'd rather get an Audigy and save the rest of the money for some more ram, a better video card, or better yet, Conroe, when it's out.
I had problems with my AC'97 on BF2 and some other games as well. I fixed by disabling the sound in my BIOS, rebooting, and enabling it on my next boot. It worked for a bit but I decided to go to Wal-Mart and get a $30 cheapie card.
Yep. that's the thing to do.
I'm running off a crappy sound card but it's decent and it works.

Probably true as a general statment, but I don't think BF2 is any more sensitive to OCing than some other newer CPU intense games. I'm OCing 55%, I've run BF2 at 2.75 Ghz with ram speed at 275Mhz (different chip than my current one) and it ran good.ShotYourSix wrote:

Could just be me as I overclocked my rig a bunch.Overclocking: Battlefield 2 is sensitive to overclocking. If you've overclocked any components on your system and are having problems such as crashes, reboots and graphical anomalies, the first thing to do is set everything back to default speeds and try running the game. If you don't experience the same problems at default speed, or they're reduced in severity, then your overclock is the primary culprit. Either permanently reduce your overclock and/or increase cooling to regain stability. Don't assume that because other games run with stability at a particular speed that BF2 will do the same.
That said I run 8 channel onboard sound. Realtek ALC850.
ur OCing 55% using a stock fan?
way to go if you do.
OCing does cause some minor stability issues though cuz I've experienced a few freezes w/ my OC'ed rig though it's probably a combination of 1.3 and the number of procceses run by xp

Wow this card kicks ass. Seems my fps dropped just a little, but hasnt affected my play any. Just need to get some 5.1 speakers. I was reading a description of the driver:
in the description of this X-fi driver For Battlefield 2 (version 1.12)
* Allows you to hear audio from speakers when the X-Fi audio driver option is selected
WTF, Um DUH!!

It sounds like it's not worth the trouble and money of buying an X-Fi unless you've got FPS to spare. The best I ever even plan to get anyway is an Audigy 2 ZS.
Although Newegg has them on sale today for 40$ cheaper.

Not a stock fan, it's an arctic cooler Freezer 64 pro. It was only about $25 for me, much better than a $50 or $60 monster and all the ratings I've read show it cools just as well.T0tal-Annihilation wrote:

You can get 1 now for $15 here:

heh. looks decent.
I'm running a P4 2.8 Oc'ed 10% @ 3.07. temps at 40 C, atm as I'm running a few OC sensitive apps though I've been to 60% hehe.
Doesn't really help me much as I'm getting bottlenecked graphics-wise. (BFG Nvidia 5700 LE 256mb w/ OC.)
getting an average of 40-50 fps running @ medium everything w/ AA 2x.
Aha so ur a medic/spec ops whore hehe

The only sound problem I have is that I can't get BF2 to recognize my headset. I can run TS fine, but no in-game voip for me.
That's weird cuz BF2 supposedly should go through your sound driver meaning that it goes to the same place TS does to detect your mic assuming it's plugged into your mic plug and not the usb.

they're integrated with Asus mobo's.
Has anybody else had a problem with them or what?
It stops giving sound in the middle of BF2 and just quits after a while.
I stopped using it maybe a year ago and replaced it with my old SantaCruz card though I have a friend who's dead set on using the chipset.
As far as I know, it's not a driver problem nor anything else; I'd say it's just the chip.
Anybody know a fix?
Give this a try. I fixed my VOIP issues and sound issues for my secondary computer that doesn't have a separate sound card for sound.
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross." - Sinclair Lewis
Due to shitty drivers Creative has for my particular sound card, my line in and mic ports don't work so only the speakers do and I get screwed on TS and BF2 for VOIP.
