how can you use battlerecorder on a public server? I try it and it says something like "cant record as a client" or something like that.

You can't record the demo, the server has to have battlerecorder turned on. When you play a game on a server with battlerecorder, a link to download the demo of that round will apear in the community section. You can download it from there.
