e.g caber toss, haggis hurling, wellie wanging, tip cat, aunt sally (z0mg oxfordshire).

They are played almost solely in the UK and the rest of the world has very little interest. American sports on the other hand, e.g. Basketball, Baseball, American Football (ftw) are played by million all over the world.

Is this proof that British sports are indeed SHIT or are we missing something?

*I'd like to amend the title of this topic to read 'Are British sports shit?'. The current one is a little too much of an obvious statement and this was unfair. Unfortunately it won't let me.

Edit: Sheaf toss. I forgot about that one. And yes Highland Dancing is considered a sport in the UK.

Also, this thread is in response to all the BS found over here:

OK so back on topic...Why are british sports so shit?

Cricket...have you ever watched a cricket match or tourney...christ it lasts forever and is even more boring than a baseball pitchers duel game.

Rugby...a sport played largely in the US by guys who weren't good enough to play soccer (futball) or big/skilled enough to play football.  Though it's played by more people globally than american football i doubt it has a larger viewer base.

Funny the one Europeon sport that i have an interest in wasn't even mentioned...F1.  Of corse NASCAR would probably kick it's ass too...

well thats ur opinion, but i think american sports are shit. and theres only 1 sport that rules the world and only 1 sport you will ever need, its called Football, you know the game where u use your feet. quite how running with a ball is called football i have no idea, then again thats why everyone calls it american football but urselves. also ur probably one of the only countries in the world to hardly notice the world cup, u have no idea what ur missing out on, cept for the smart few there who know what a Real sport is.

ok, WormGuts, you dont know shite about rugby or cricket fan bases. Do you know the population of india and sri lanka? almost 1 BILLION people. And 80% + play cricket. The population's of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa also equal a few million people, and we all watch the Tri-Nations. Oh, no we all watch it because we think its shit......
*slaps hand to head in frustration*
American's think that British sports are shit because you have all the "we beat them in the war of independance" stuff carrying over. British sports are some of the most loved games globally thanks to Britains expansionist colonial conquests in the past. Im not even british and i think british games are good, as do most former colonial nations. Yeah all those cultural games like caber toss and whatever are played in the UK because there just that. CULTURAL GAMES! just like in america, your american football is adored by millions around the country, but for the rest of the world it looks like some weird boxing match.

By and large, british cultural games are played because they reflect the history of the nation, and the other british sports like cricket and rugby are played by millions around the world. Somehow, i dont think they consider them shite games.

LOL whatever you say, dude. we have placekickers and punters in american football. and as far as 'real sports' are considered, soccer is nothing compared to rugby, but we're not talking about that game are we? now hush up.

back on topic: is highland dancing a considered a "sport?" if it is, i'll add it to our list.

i know the game known as football world wide.  i played it for 23 years.  it just has little to no relevance in the US.  i find this to be terribly unfortunate.  i also am a HUGE hockey fan, another largely unfollowed sport in the US.  i was a damn good keeper in my day.  i was courted by a number of the top colleges until i blew out a knee my junior year in high school, followed by the other knee and a torn rotator cuff my senior year.  both knees were taken out by forwards blasting at a ball i had dove upon and scooped away.  i only hope that life pays them back.

oh there you go...should a canadian start up a post about how strong hockey and lacrosse are worldwide?

perhaps that should be the forum topic/poll...biggest world sport...futball, football, baseball, cricket, rugby, hockey, F1, basketball...and now to get silly gymnastics, figureskating, lacrosse, tennis.

[edit] i forgot possibly the largest world wide sport of them all...golf...yet another english/scottish invention.

basketball is the american version of netball, which is a british invented sport. baseball is the american version of rounders, which is a british invented sport. american football is the american version of rugby, cept the pansys wear padding, and rugby is a british sport. so there :p

NO! lol. this thread is chiefly about British sports that fall into 2 categories:

1. They are, by and large, not very fun to play. At all.
and
B. They are, by and large, not played anywhere else in the world. At all.

A good example of this would be "Tip Cat"

https://www.inquiry.net/images/ohb274.gif

It's like 1 man baseball. Not very fun, and no one else plays it in any other country.

What you Americans call football/rugby/gridiron is a piss-poor version of ACTUAL rugby league or union. For instance I cannot think of too many people who know how to play the game outside of America whereas I can think of at least 15 major countries that have massive rugby league and union followings....the biggest including England and Australia. It is known as one of the biggest sports in the world. Cricket also has a massive worldwide following. Both these sports combined have more of a following and a fanbase than any sport America has ever produced. Cricket and rugby league are played in more countries than you yanks even know how to spell or name. I wish you yanks would get the fuck over yourselves and realise that within 50 years you will no longer be regarded as a great superpower, nor even a great nation...but one that the rest of the world finally realised was fucking the rest of us up.

The only reason cricket, rugby, and football is played all over the world is because England used to own alot of it.

"Cricket and rugby league are played in more countries than you yanks even know how to spell or name."
Since your so educated in wordly affairs, please name all those countries that americans can't spell.  I mean, you must be using some super secret english that nobody's heard or read of before.

well duh...if we ever get the rich minority out of power that just might happen...however, who's the more igonorant the puppet or the man who pulls the strings?

why does the rest of the world feel a need to cowtow to what our "leadership" feels is right?

Have you noticed that the popularity of the leadership in the countries that "cowtow" to American leadership is dwindling at a startling rate? The reason the leadership of the Brits and us Aussies is basically doing the yanks bidding is more the current threat that if we dont then we will be excluded (or at least relegated to the back lines) of the world market that is currently (and sadly) being highly controlled by the US. What gave the US the right to decide that they were going to become a superpower anyways huh?

Tromboner999 If you are refering to the British in your comment then I guess you might be correct but I am Australian so I have no idea what the hell you are talking about.
