I got both of my Good Conduct Medals and was supprised to get them.

I remember ages ago i played and randomly ranked
the second time I got the good conduct ribbon, definitely shocked me
I got a few ribbons while I was just playing... a few of them were IAR team points and things like that.

A lot of my ribbons were unexpected.
I also got my transport badge unexpectedly while trying to Jihad jeep my way to getting my basic explosives(Fushe Pass.. got them in the same round )

Occasionally I connect to a server, and it'll rank me as a private with no unlocks. Often I'll just go ahead and play, but various basic badges (armour and all the kits) keep popping up and scaring the bajingo outta me.
I recently got Vet Ground Defense while commanding on Karkand after the standards were lowered
all the time!
I got the armored service ribbon the other day....I really don't use tanks very often but just fought in one for fun. I didn't even think about the award until I got it. Thats the best way to get an award, much more satisfying if you ask me.

Vet Engineer: I was just defending the Bridge on Karkand as MEC and suddendly *drum roll*. I was so surprised, i died b/c i was just like "wtf?" and was staring at the award. First time i died all round too
Vet Repari: I was just driving with an armour convoy on Kubra Dam and i decided to go repair our Artillery... first one i did *drum roll* i was like... "woah!" but i was happy. I never thought i'd get that badge, so i didn't try at all, lol
Basic Aviator: That was the first badge i got... i was on CleanSweep as a passenger and i suddenly got the award.... didn't exactly know what it meant b/c it was my first time playing...
Infantry Officer Ribbon: I was just a squad leader on Daqing... and suddenly... BING!!! i got it... i didn't get what it was... but i was happy all the same
Aerial Service Ribbon: I just decided to fly a plane on Clean Sweep, and i eventually checked my round stats with 'Tab' and saw i had 28 kills... i was like "OMG! must get 19 min!!!" about 2 seconds later i got it... lol
Crew Service Ribbon: I never thought i'd get this, b/c of the large amount of Assists you need, but i got in the gunners seat of a guy's tank on Karkand, and after about halfway through the round, i got it
Meritorious Unit Ribbon: I was just going around capping flags on Kubra, and i got it... that put a smile on my face

My veteran Spec Ops didn't expect it so fast..
Just the veteran flash bang badge. But that was just after 1.3 where the requirement changed. Also the very few I got at the beginning but I found this site a few days after I started playing so I expected pretty much everything.
I actually went for the purple heart... thought it was cool to have a medal and that one seemed easy, make 5 kills and jump in front of vehicles the rest of the round. Only later I realised how stupid the medal is.
But to answer the real question: yep a few times, basic aviator for example, or when I have the private bug and get 6 badges in one round

quite a few of my awards i just ended up getting when i didnt go for them, but when i did go for some of them it was really hard... weird how that works. but i think the majority i realised i was able to get an award so i just went for it and got it.
