Hey guys!

I am just starting to dig into the flying of planes and up to now, I have used a joystick to roll and pitch and the keyboard (A and D) to yaw and it works just fine. However, I have read in a number of flying tutorials that it is prefferable to use the joystick only. I have tried this and find it difficult to master, though I am continously getting better.

Now my question to you is if you think it is worth relearning flying to use the joystick only? Can you really fly better that way, or is using the keyboard just fine?

I know, dumb question, but hey: Why not ask the experienced guys first?

Thanks it advance!

Personnaly I use the joystick to roll and pitch like everyone does but I use the 3 buttons on the base of the joystick to yaw and to switch weapon (the 3 buttons at the base replace ADF)

It's F1, F2 and >

Does using the joystick makes u avoid heat seeking missiles better? I feel like ranting whenever i got shot down in a powerful jet. Eg. F-35b vs MIG-29 and F-18 vs MIG-29

yeahh... but.. it depends, it helps you to make sharper curves but it doesnt mean you will avoid them everytime.

Id say that I increased my "aa-avoiding-ratio".

Personnaly I see an aa lock like a lose of 1/3 of my hp and if I can avoid the missiles, its good. but the best way to avoid them is to fly high I think.

I use have the same joystick as -=Raska=- but I don't use it because it causes my game to lag, but it is good for other games. But for BF2 mouse and keyboard FTW

mine can too but.. its not precise enough and I prefer the buttons on the base. I had been flying a lot before with my keyboard and mouse. I was used to AD to yaw so I use F2 and F1 on my joystick, it gives me the same feeling.

I use my Game controller Saitek P750. However, it doesn't matter if I use the keyboard or my Controller because I suck as jet pilot

I use arrow keys for the rudder and the mouse for the pitch and yaw.
I don't like Joysticks. I used them once in BF1942 to fly and didn't like them at all. Plus there's the whole issue with the phallic appearance and the suggestive name; 'Joy' stick.

BUY A LOGITECH WINGMAN FORCE 3D.

it has the BEST price/layout/quality. i abused mine over 200 hours. everything is like the first day i got it. maybe some dust here and there.

but if you use a joystick, and its not 3d, its better not to use one at all. its the BEST part of joysticks..... (3d means x, y, and twist)

also it has a very nice throttle controller, all keys are easy to use and has a big base if you want to use it on your lap.

NOTE: I'm not saying its the joystick, but the best for its price

Joysticks are a waste of money if you can fly like I can with a mouse and keyboard.

I have the epitome of cheap joystick....

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006 … p;n=172282

I'm even amazed that the price is $25 seeing as it has no fancy stuff... But it gets the job done! I have the roll and tilt controls in joystick and to yaw I use two buttons at the top of it right underneath the round button for bombs etc. and those two correspond to yaw controls. Never thought of using keyboard and joystick so I forced myself to find something and I can't fly any other way pretty much.

keyboard and mouse is way better. ive used both joystick and keyboard and mouse, joystick turning is a lot slower IMHO but mouse is faster

M&K piloting FTW   Actually, I'm just too cheap to get a joystick.  My best friend has one, but I pwn him out of the sky usually.

I use a PS2 controller to fly choppers and jets.. those 2 analog sticks makes it easy to pitch and roll, and there is manny buttons to map for other things

I am really suprised to see so many that use the M&K. To each their own. I found it alot easier to use a joy stick when flying planes. Choppers on the other hand, it is easier to fly with M&K. If you buy a Joysitck make sure it rotates.

I use a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 joystick and I love it.  If you like to fly I would suggest that you get one.  I mean when do you ever see a jet in real life being flown with a mouse and keyboard.
