Anally Retentive.  Known more comoonly as the Obsessive Compulsive Disorders.

I am on the OCD Spectrum.  Most people are.  Question is, where do YOU fit in?

Personally, I cannot play an RPG without spending hours tidying my character's backpacks.
Luckily, BF2 is pretty free of distractions as far as OCD goes...

My sincere apologies if anyone is offended by this categorisation.  I have a couple of OCD friends and we joke about it quite lightly.  I guess it's the kind of people they are; it's never been an offensive issue before.
Please take this post in the good nature with which it is intended.

Hrm, some insignificant things can annoy me, for example a poster half hanging off the wall, if it's in my eye-line while trying to relax or something, i cant settle till i fix it...kinda funny i guess. Although having an untidy room doesn't really bother me at all, odd.

I set up my playing area just right before i start a game, things have to be in the right place, but thats mild.
As a kid i went through a stage of "unwinding" i had to turn round the opposite way if i went round a corner!
Good god WTF was i thinking.

i couldn't decide about this, i mean i think i have a bit of a problem with it, and my wife is quite bad.  And we are OK with it, but i think many are upset by their uncontrollable habits etc and therefor would be upset by the anally retentive comment.

I think the post is meant to be good natured, so its fine, but CH has a good point.

I was going to do an OCD sufferer userbar for my wife as a joke, but thought it might upset others so didn't.  Would that have been to much?

Depends how you take it.  When you accept that many people don't know what OCD is, you accept that despite the term's origin, it's simply their name for it.  I don't care what people call it.

I dont like half empty clips for one reason
it doesnt allow me to fill a guys chest with lead. PLus, i normally miss, so its better having more bullets to rely on

Now back on topic, as far as OCD goes I have to reload after every time I pull the trigger hence why my stats SUCK DONKEYS BALLS and why I play as support all the time ( I run outta ammo far too easily otherwise)

I also used to TK someone for every 10 kills I got but Im trying to kick the habit cos I heard it can make me sterile.....holy crap I need to stop drinking.

at least I managed to stop throwing a nade jumping 3 times going prone and throwing an ammo bag before getting into any vehicle, used to take me forever to get anywhere.........

that's only because people misuse the terms. In this case he's using the term as it was meant to be used.

Freud is the one who came up with "anally retentive" as one of the types of personality that develops based on his model of the important phases of development. Basically, people with obsessively controlled / ordered personalities were 'anal retentive' as babies (literally...). Freud's model of the child's development is like a series of problems that need to be resolved and failing to resolve one of them causes subconcious issues. But these days Freud isn't really that popular. He had some nice theories and all, but none of them can really be tested (aside from the oral and anal stages, which are actually reasonably true according to most studies; eg. the behaviour of the child in the oral and anal stages can predict their adult personality type in a general sort of way)

argh but I just have to add:

the problem with the 'anal retentive' type theory is it ISNT the only way that people can end up with OCD. Like all mental health issues OCD is complex.
Let me say also that the vast majority of things everyone here has mentioned are not examples of OCD or even OCD like behaviour. You're talking more about compulsions / habits, where you keep doing something because thats what you're used to doing. OCD is more like, you have to wash your hands hundreds of times a day, or your house needs to be cleaned constantly, or something bad will happen if you dont arrange all the letters you get in order of surname of sender.

Thanks for what is probably the fullest answer i have seen.

So, you were saying that an "anally retentive" child could develop OCD?  So whilst the term isn't correct for an adult suffering from OCD there is a correct connection.  (according to Freud) I didn't know any of that.

Yeah i see that most of what we are jokingly talking about is just a mild conditioning sort of thing.  I know how upset some people can get when they cant "fix" the thing their OCD is about.  eg alphabetically sorting things.

I don't think i have ever seen a thread get derailed into a serious debate before. Sorry, people.
Perhaps we should stick to silly compulsive things in BF2?
