time for me to get a new graphics card

i currently have an ati x850xt AGP card

the card i have at the mo works fine but i want to switch to a pcie card.

i'v never had a nvidia card before so i would like some opinions.

do i get an ati x1900xtx or a nvidia 7900gtx

i'v heard different stuff about both cards, mostly that the ati is the faster card but runs a lot hotter and that ati's drivers are shit compared to nvidia drivers.

so whats your thoughts?

Nvidia for now is two steps ahead of ATI, SLi is the primary reason for that even though ATI has the crossfire, it never out performed the 7900. Both will handle any game out there.

Neither, I think the 7900 performs slightly better, but there are horror stories of it oevrheating. With your graphics card I would wait until the next gen directx 10 cards get released, ATI has already announced thiers. At the very least a new card should have HDMI to play back HD content, without directx 10 you will not be able to use Vista to its full potential and will be out of date in a very short space of time.

This also lets you wait for the core 2 duo mobos to mature so and the processors to drop in price and giving you a much better upgrade and also the chance to see what AMD can do.

The 7900 series is still having lots of problems from what I understand. I recommend reading up on it in the EVGA forums. The only 7900 that isn't having theese problems is the 7950GX2, which I have (and its great.)

The 1900xtx is better. The only card that beats a 1900xtx right now, is the GeForce 7950GX2. Which is basically two whole video cards in one, with 1gb of video memory. However, two 1900xtx's would smoke it. Also, the next ATi card which will be two cards in one, will completely own anything on the market at the moment.

When the G80 and ATi's DX10 card come out, ATi will still be better.

That being sad, I like NVidia better.
