I have my distance set to 100% and all of my video settings on medium.  Sometimes when i go to play i can barely see 15ft in front of me through the fog.  I know that other people can see it because im getting sniped from across the map when i cant even see anywhere near that far because of the fog.  Anyone know what other settings could fix this or why this would be?

Yeha, the FOG!!! I almost see nothing in some map (Shongua Stalemate), but sometimes when i walk in the deep of a bamboo jungle i see a distant flash and... ouch! dead!! Not only appen from snipers, I die for m16a2 too! Someone knows how it is possible? (I have a medium/high settings with a medium/high pc....)

May be the wall hack. Is it happening on a consitent basis such as a server you always play on or against a certain clan?

I have a similar problem.

I never change my settings, which are Viewing distance 100% everything else on Medium.

Somedays i can see ok, like on Karkand, from the gatehouse across the water to the train, other days i can barely see to the island with the 2 towers on it.

It is very frustating but as yet i have not found an explanation or solution.

I talk to mates on teamspeak and they can see ok when i can't and sometimes i see ok when they can't.

Its weird.

If anyone has any ideas they would be welcome.

Thanks

100% distance, settings all on high, I believe. Fog appears here and there but it hasn't been a problem so far.

could it be a graphics card issue ?

According to
http://www.tweakguides.com/BF2_5.html
the "view distance scale" is not the only video option affecting your eagle eyes' spotting capability, but as it states the geometry detail level contributes to it also.  (the other video options? I dont know)

Most likely nothing to worry about but an idea that crossed my mind. As there is wide spectrum of video card,  GPU and driver combinations out there, everyone gets their fog rendered mainly in the same way but with some minor variations. These minor variations come into play on the edge of the view distance scale as details are starting to blend into the fog color. So, the foe with ATI9800+Catalyst0.4 might still see your faint outline against the background color and on your screen (FX5800+detornator0.2) there's nothing but the background color... (I think I made myself clear

All you need is a Nvidia 6800 or higher with 512 RAM, a 21 inch CRT monitor .28 dot pitch or higher, an Athlon 64 3200 or higher, 2gb system RAM or higher and all your settings set at maximum and you can see from horizon to horizon.  I can see snipers hiding in the bush and soldiers hiding in dark alleys.  Don't help me much because I'm old but at least I see who kills me.

it's weird though...on some days it seems as though there's no fog and on others it seems as though there's more.  ...and i havent changed my settings around.

i'm running an nvidia 6800, p4 3gig, 1gig of ram, 17" flat gaming monitor...

Remember that you CAN'T get maximum values for graphics from the in-game setup. You have to edit the config file and change them manually. There are higher values than "HIGHEST" (or what was it...at the in-game setup..).
These values (or higher if hardware allows..) will give the best view. There are lights, ground and shadows too but only the ones below really matter.

VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 4
VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 4
VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 4
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing 6Samples

I love sneaking around in the fog is Stalemate, it's awesome fun, you can really go covert. I loved it when some guy thought he could be really sneaky in trying to get one of our points. One of the easiest kills ever. Very satisfying.

I'd have to tell you how my graphics are setup from home but I can always see fine. One setting I noticed was dynamic lights... set on medium it adds a smoother look to everything, set on low shadows don't show up as much and I can see better inside buildings and seems to make it easier to spot silhouettes on the horizon.

i heard a rumor that 64bit CPUs create higher viewing distances. not quiet sure about that, but maybe its true, or someone used cheats. think of the varieties of cheats, that could give u the possibility to see/aim thru the environment.

please don't go there. we don't need another thread de-railing becuase of his stats.  use the search if you must discuss his stats as it has been covered several times already.  as for the Fog, I know that some people have used a hack that eliminates the Fog all together, so that maybe how they are able to see and hit you.

yes. some people really are that low and will do anything to cheat the system.  there are sites out here that are devoted to developing cheats to get past PunkBuster.

Another thing to consider is turning down your settings. Depending on the game, if your video card cannot properly display something it may not be displayed at all. I can recall reading that in BF Vietnam people would turn down their settings so much of the foliage wasn't displayed. So some some dude who was hiding behind a bush was plainly visible to someone who turned down thier settings.

This works but, unfortunately, bf2 doesnt support 6xAA for nvidia hardware. I know this for fact because my desktop has an x800 and I can chose 6xAA in the drop down menu. And on my laptop I have a 6800 go and I tried editing the video.con file to get 6xAA (b/c it doesnt show in the menu) and it crashed when it tried to load my profile

Here's my idea.  Everyone go into Karkand and stand at the top of the steps that are near the capture point across the bridge from the train accident.  Point your crosshairs at the train accident and take a screenshot then post it here with your machine specs.  Team activate!

If this works I will be amazed.
