I'm trying to practice with helos, I got manuvering down pretty good but I have a hard time with the rockets - they seem to be pretty random.  Sometimes they're way below the crosshair, sometimes they're way above, and if I'm strafing...fageddaboudit.  What decides where they go, how can I reproduce that (so I can know where they're going to hit), and why don't they just fire where the + is!?

Thanks in advance.

It depends on which direction the chopper is moving.

For practice in seeing this, first hover. Now press W and fire your missiles as you rise. Reload, and press S, firing your missiles again as you lose altitude. Watch the direction that the missiles deviate from the crosshair. Same principle for any direction.

All I can say is practice makes perfect i've only just got the hang of it after 60ish hours in a helo

When you're moving forward there is a line above the crosshair, this is where they will hit. Don't try and be precise with them while strafing- you can hit the odd troop, but you won't be able to focus them enough to take out a tank etc.

the rockets are extremely precise, each one travels at the exact same trajectory from each side.  It's how the chopper is moving that affects where you aim.  accurate straffing of air targets is not an easy thing.  It takes a LOT of hours to get deadly with the rockets.  I would suggest finding an empty Kubra server and spending some time with the Cobra and Havok.  Cobra has a really tight grouping, the havok is mostly useless as you can fit a dumptruck between the rockets.

I typically have a best guess thing going on, you sort of learn after a bit of time. Plus I always fire off 1 missile first, taking note of where it is then I fire off my salvo of rockets.

Or I just switch to the gunners seat and use the tv missile.

if your stationary your rockets will center with the cross hairs if your flying forward at full speed the rockets will drop below the cross hairs & vice verser in reverse

You know the lines to the left of the right of the crosshairs that move when you increase or decrease your pitch? Use those as a guide for the missles when your moving forward.

As to strafing, that takes skill. Practice on single player until you get a general idea.

Also, keep in mind the location of the rocket pods. For the AH-17 (I think it's different for the others, try em and find out) the first missle fires from the left, then the second from the right and so on and so forth. Anything inside 100 meters, aim a little left or right for that. Helps when sniping infantry.

Search for helicopter guides on these forums, there's alot of good info.

I think the Mec (Havok)'s pods are mounted further out because of its squat profile, so the rockets are harder to aim. The Cobra and the Z-10 fuselage are narrower (and I think the Cobra's is the narrowest)

try strafing left or right while throwing a grenade or shooting a grenade launcher

its the same principle

There was a topic on here not long ago about this - it was very useful and spelled it out perfectly.

But its basically the line when you are flying straight. When you are tilted, its different and harder to predict.

spend 450 hours piloting various choppers. Then you can shoot down a housefly with the pilot rockets no problem.

If you want to hit right on your crosshairs, you need to decelerate. Hold down your S key and keep looking at your target and let fly.

If you are moving forward with your nose down your rockets will fire above your crosshairs.

Like everyone said, practice. It took me 60 hours on my other account to get good with rockets, then I started a second account just because I love choppers that much.

With the choppers with a widerbody and wider rocket spread, you can hit a vehicle from front/rear on but it is best to pump it into their side profile.

Next trick to learn is predicting movement of your target... and either nailing the hostile chopper as he goes from one side to the other, or using a single rocket to take out a running infantryman.

EDIT: or just read the guide in the link above, that guy has done an amazing job.

I will adress this in a chopper guide (Soon to be released! ).

Basically, If your nose is pointed downwards, the rockets will go above the crosshair. If you're pulling up (nose up) then they will go below the crosshair. Speed and Torque also affect rocket placement. As far as the rockets themselves, they are each place individually. Not one rocket will land in the same place as the other if you aren't moving. The first rocket will be the bottom right rocket on the left side. Then the second is the bottom left rocket on the right side. Then the Upper outsides, the Upper insides, and finally the lower insides in that order. It isnt very noticable but with time in the chopper you will see it really makes a difference.

Edit: I forgot to mention that if you are strafing right, the rockets will go WAY right. Same for left.

Practice practice and more practice

Before long, you'll be able to control where your rockets hit with great accuracy.

I use the first one or two rockets to judge my following shots. I think it's easier to pinpoint targets while spin/strafing than head-on btw.

use the force

seriously, fire 1 rocket at the time, ajust repeat, when your on let your mousebutton die.

and on ground targets start with low speed low altitude aproaches and increase. with more practice and routine you'l get the feel for it.

or simpy try it with a pre-nerf version, it's a lot easier with 14 rockets

The large choppers such as the HIND and the Mi-28 Havoc tend to have missles that hit a distance away from each other.  That is not the same as saying they are random, they are just a little harder to aim, and you have to release them from farther away to hit the same target.
