do you have to be to set off a claymore?

sometimes i spot it, start running off in the opposite direction and BOOM! even though i was quite far away.
other times i will spot it just at the very last split second and somehow manage to jump over it and it won't go off.

is it just luck? are they inconsistent?

searched "claymore distance". Maybe one of those will help. But I know what you mean, you see it, and it doesnt blow, so you start to move and then you die. I once managed to avoid death by one on Warlord. I was capturing the TV Station, a sniper spawned in the room by the flag (i was on the balcony) and he managed to drop a claymore about 10 feet in front of me before I killed him. Well, I capped the flag, and just didnt move til the claymore disappeared. I knew it would eventually, because he died......so I just waited for about 5 minutes.
