I have been studying this picture for 30 min and can not figure it out. How is it possible for there to be a empty sqaure im going crazy!!!

Just click on the explanation link above that. I had typed up my whole explanation on how this works (they're not really triangles, hypotenuse is bent) and then I noticed that link and found the answer. Oops.
