about 15 years ago I bought a divx dvd player, it plays .avi files if you burn them to a CD/DVD as a "data disc" which is great because I can fit 5 or 6 movies on one dvd and just cycle through them

well lately its harder to find avi files because most movies are in MP4 or MKV format and my older divx dvd player wont play them or it just plays the audio etc

My question is there a dvd player that will play those newer file types in the same way the old one plays the avi files ?

thanks for any info that gets posted

oh... right.

hardware dvd player... why would one need one of those in this day and age?

maybe this would help: http://www.dune-hd-usa.com/
just copy all your video files to somekinda storage (flash drive) and plug it in? dvd's are so last age.

I recently bought the LG BP240 Blu-Ray player for €40.
http://www.lg.com/uk/blu-ray-dvd-player … s/lg-BP240

It can play these file types and codecs from USB (pendrive/HDD) or disc (BD, DVD, CD):

Note:
Some players can't officially play the DIVX codec, apparently due to license costs, but they still CAN be played if you change the video file's FourCC from DIVX to XVID (i.e. spelled backwards), if the player supports the license free XVID codec.
Use Gspot to check the codec. http://www.videohelp.com/software/gspot
Then use a batch conversion tool to change the FourCC. http://www.tweaking4all.com/home-theatr … c-changer/

I just use ConvertXtoDVD to burn the discs and it works on anything.

I just got back from a long deployment to Germany and I haven't really been keeping up with the latest media tech but
I figured there was an easy solution to my dilemma

I will try using ConvertXtoDVD for now, is it pretty easy to use and does it take forever to convert the movie ?

I also found this thing, what do you guys think about this device

thanks for all the help

I depends on the quality of the source and the quality and number of passes etc. I think I just left mine as pretty much standard settings and probably takes around 30-45 mins to burn. It's real easy to use you just add the file/s you want and click convert, auto creates menus (you can pick the style edit the titles etc.) chapters etc.
For instance I just burned that Bosch series onto 2 discs (1 was too small) just named the episodes 1,2,3 etc click add file for each one the main menu for the dvd is automatically setup and you just click convert and wait for it to finish.
