You're really giving me crap for being intellectually flexible and willing to change my beliefs as I gain new information? Should I still be the same sixteen year old angry kid who is jealous of his classmates and possesses vaguely communist beliefs because he wants to see them brought down to his level? Should I be the early 20 something that believed in the power of government to do right and held vague beliefs on greening the economy and voted for Ralph Nader? Should I be the late 20 something that read Ayn Rand and had a brief flirtation with the idea of the go-it-alone superman of Nietchze's world? Or should I be a person that matures over time and whose thought process changes as he ages? I'm sorry that you're bored and that I'm not the exact same person I was eight years ago when I joined this forum. It would be easier for you, I know, rather than constantly tilting at the windmill of whatever caricature you developed of me long ago.

Most people change over time uzi. The people that are old and conservative now were probably liberal when they were your age. I constantly question my beliefs and try to accept when I'm wrong and make a correction. It's an imperfect process.

I bet Jay's final form will be as a Christian conservative. We will see him standing in front of the Supreme Court with his two kids and sticker over his mouth in about 3 years.

I have been to the websites you read. They are clickbait shit like everywhere else.

I think constitutionalism is dumb for the same reason I think biblical literalism and Sharia are stupid. The arguments are the same. "This is a sacred document handed down from our wise ancestors. All of the answers and rules we should live by are in here"

I live in the 21St century. What George Washington thought the ideal government should be like has just as much influence on me as how Moses thought the ideal Jewish community should live like. I don't care. I have 21St century problems.
No, I like constitutionalism not because I think it's infallible like religious people view the bible, that's an unfair (progressive) caricature. I don't worship at the altars of James Madison or Thomas Jefferson or Ben Franklin or Alexander Hamilton, I look at the document they wrote as a very strict shield against the tyranny that they experienced under British monarchs, or that they pulled from other historical tyrants. I do believe in freedom of the press, and speech, and the right to bear arms, and protections against unlawful search and seizure. I do believe that we should all be given due process. Sure, these are all old fashioned ideas that stemmed from the Enlightenment, but that doesn't make them wrong in any way, or diminish their value.

Progressivism has, in my eyes, and in the eyes of many, more in common with the tyranny of an absolute monarchy than not, and it is the exact form of government that the original government of this country was seeking to prevent gaining power. You were taught by progressives in college, you espouse progressive beliefs here, and that's fine, but the main reason progressives have an issue with the constitution is because it limits what they can accomplish at the federal level, and I am more than ok with that. It's a feature, not a flaw.

I like that California gets to conduct their grand experiment in one party progressive rule. I don't want to live there, but it will be interesting to see what will and won't work and whether or not they'll have the courage to correct any errors along the way. I have my doubts, but we'll see, and that's part of the fun of a federal system. At the same time, Missouri gets to double down on the police state and put kids in jail for fighting in the schoolyard. I also don't want to live there.

Nah, I've been consistently agnostic and libertarian. Surface beliefs have evolved, but I still believe people should be left alone to live their own lives.

The constitution is a charter for the super-rich to control America forever through their one party system.

California is the one part of America which is not living in the past and hence why creative and innovative people want to live there, not some hick rust-belt place stuck on religion which is going no-where.
How does average income and quality of life in California compare with the rest of America?

'Constitutionalism' really is like believing the words of the prophet as recorded in the Koran can never be reinterpreted or changed and anyone who thinks otherwise should have their head cut off.

California has great weather. It's really the only reason why the tech center converged there.

ya you clearly do not know the history of Silicon Valley.  Access to elite intellectuals at places like Stanford contributed to Silicon Valley.  The US government has huge operations in the Bay Area. The first led to a congregation of smart people developing stuff. The second led to an aerospace and radio industry pushing the envelope of research for government purposes.  These were the biggest factors in creating the tech sector in the Bay Area.  It has literally ZERO to do with the weather.

here's a decent doc I saw a few years ago

Silicon Valley has one of the highest concentrations of Superfund sites (result of the old semiconductor factories that sprung up after WW2, which were also the inspiration for the name Silicon Valley) in the US.

Irvine/SoCal became a sort of biotech center because of UCI - again, zero to do with weather.

FYI Jay, the weather in the Bay Area ain't that great

Cali also has a $9B budget surplus.  California almost always operates with a budget surplus.  California is doing some things right.

Well, maybe you're too close to it, but the perception from here on the east coast is that California is the place to go for a laid back lifestyle in the sun. If that wasn't the defining feature, why would tech companies go out of their way to portray themselves as selling it? They're all full of cool nerds that skateboard to work and surf on the weekends. I see sky-high cost of living, taxes, and a bunch of self-satisfied assholes, personally, but it's what they're selling, and people are still flocking.

There are plenty of other areas of the country that would've served as technology incubators. California isn't all that special. You had Shockley at Bell Labs, but it could've been just about any other place. People stayed for the weather.

that's your perception of what they are selling. Having been to Google, Amazon and Facebook headquarters and having some experience in their recruiting process (FYI, unless you are a high level software/hardware engineer, the pay ain't that great), that isn't what they are selling at all.

Tech companies EVERYWHERE use their company culture as a recruiting tool. It isn't endemic to the bay area (or tech companies for that matter).

Perception vs. reality.

Have you been to the Bay Area any time outside of June -> August? The weather up there isn't that good. They have a bay (SHOCKER) that leads to fog covering the city half the year.  It gets cold and rainy as shit.  Maybe compared to North Atlantic, yeah the weather is good since it doesn't snow much.  But...no

I know the weather sucks in the winter. But the perception is that the sun is always shining and everyone is chill. I'm not knocking it, just saying it's easy to draw out young nerds when they think they'll be banging fit blondes at the beach. There's nothing inherently special about Stanford or Berkeley that would draw billions of dollars worth of investors.

I mean, we get the same shit here. Tens of thousands of young people flock here every year to experience the city and the fast lifestyle. Some stay. Most get priced out and head back home after a few years. They're certainly not coming here for the high taxes and the insanely corrupt state government.

How did you guys get from Jay's stupid comment about California to a debate about Silicon Valley? There is more to Cali than just silicon valley and tech companies. They have the largest agricultural sector in the U.S. There are plenty of rural areas and suburbs that aren't like the ignorant opiate devastated rural hell holes that exist in the mid-west.

If you say so. Plenty of rednecks in California, just like there are here in New York.

what, hearing that silicon valley only exists because Jay thinks the weather in NorCal is paradise and people only go there because they are nerds that fantasize about having sex with blondes on the beaches there in between surfing to work isn't amusing to you?  It's easily the funniest thing I've read on this forum in the last few months.

The rednecks just come because they hear California is full of communists to shoot at and there are woods to build isolated armageddon compounds there.  That's the perception I just made up in my head at least

There wouldn't even be rednecks here if it wasn't for the communists

If I lived in the woods I too would build an Armageddon compound like on DoomsDay preppers. I am going to inherit a home in suburban Tampa. I plan to stockpile weapons, build walls, and buy a greenhouse to protect myself.

I bought some billabong stuff when I was 13 and had a crush on a white girl in my 7th grade class. Her name was Jessica. She is now married to some dude shaped and sized like Jay. Her loss!

I am sure he probably has a better personality than me. She still has to watch a huffing blob crawl on top of her to fuck though. I don't understand how any woman can put up with that. How can anyone find rolls of fat and flesh appealing? I can't.
