Silicon Valley has one of the highest concentrations of Superfund sites (result of the old semiconductor factories that sprung up after WW2, which were also the inspiration for the name Silicon Valley) in the US.

Irvine/SoCal became a sort of biotech center because of UCI - again, zero to do with weather.

FYI Jay, the weather in the Bay Area ain't that great
Well, maybe you're too close to it, but the perception from here on the east coast is that California is the place to go for a laid back lifestyle in the sun. If that wasn't the defining feature, why would tech companies go out of their way to portray themselves as selling it? They're all full of cool nerds that skateboard to work and surf on the weekends. I see sky-high cost of living, taxes, and a bunch of self-satisfied assholes, personally, but it's what they're selling, and people are still flocking.

There are plenty of other areas of the country that would've served as technology incubators. California isn't all that special. You had Shockley at Bell Labs, but it could've been just about any other place. People stayed for the weather.
you are such a stupid cunt it's unbelievable. you really buy into your own bullshit.

shockley went to cal tech. he was an academic at stanford. 'could have been just about any other place'.

people stayed because all the research institutions and their funding were there. not because the sunsets were nice.

I could point out music videos, movies, books, tourism advertisements, whatever, the tech industry landed in California by chance and stayed for the prestige/cool factor and the endless supply of cheap young college grads that brings out. It's the same reason businesses here keep offices in Manhattan rather than moving out to the suburbs or Jersey where it's fantastically cheaper. Believe that it's hippie politics though...

And why are you butting into this conversation anyway? Are you aware of the stereotypes that east coast Americans have for California and its culture and its climate? Don't appropriate my culture, bro.

you said that culture started and stayed in cali because of the weather. silicon valley was pretty much the creation of stanford university and the domino effect it had from there. that's how industries and cultures start and set-up roots: around institutions (any civic institution, not just educational ones).

but no, apparently it's because of the sun and beach babes in palo alto. you moron.

i think jay has got noticeably dumber in his opinions in the last 12 months. like what is going on? it's not even subtle anymore. there's not even the usual sheen of sophistication and loan phrases. he just ploughs straight ahead with his cumbersome opinions.

I am excited to see how Jay responds to having a republican president. We have only ever known him under a democrat. This may just be a "darkest before dawn" moment. He might switch to a democratic socialist in response to Trump.

Why would anyone got to SF/bay area for surf culture?

There's like 1 beach near SF and none near silicon valley.

It's really important to me for my children to be around my family and see them regularly. When my parents retire, if they move, I'm gone.

Well, don't your parents hate having their freedom stomped on too?
Surely they'd like to move somewhere the prevailing view is the Federal govt is an abomination and the wrong side won the civil war?

Texas looks nice, I'd say Alabama but that sounds too much like Obama - and he was in charge of al Qaeda so, you know.

So Trump is resolving his conflict of interests with his business by handing over management to his 2 sons... Is this a joke?

did anyone really expect a man whose whole life and self-worth has been staked on being a nepotistic tycoon to give up his business empire? you voted for a billionaire nepotist and that's what you're going to get for four years.

I don't really have a problem with it as long as he's not handling the day-to-day. It's not like he's a bomb manufacturer. He's a hotelier. It's so local who cares?

I have heard people say they are okay with him using his office to make side money as long as he builds the wall and gets rid of Muslims. They don't care about corruption or anything else as long as they can spite some people.

I care about corruption, I just think his ability to enrich himself while in office is limited by his industry. If he's caught doing land deals ahead of government actions, prosecute the shit out of him. If he's just holding onto his hotel and casino empire, I don't see much cause for concern.
