Higher income taxes and a mixed system healthcare scheme are not bravely leftist ideas. Even fascist groups support higher income taxes to support their members and healthcare systems to promote social growth. Eisenhower and Cold War republicans were okay with high taxes to support their ideological war against global communism. Really leftist ideas like changing laws regarding how corporations are structured, requiring joint ownership with the state, high taxes on capital gains, price controls for basic necessities, nationalizing natural resources and more are leftist ideas that do not get debated on television.

Debt relief and the option to refinance student loans through the financial services market are not far left ideas. Leftist don't even trust big finance. A leftist idea would be to nationalize all colleges in the U.S. and move to a totally publicly financed system like they have in Norway. No one suggest that not even Bernie since those Harvard and Yale graduates on CNN don't want their schools to become open to the masses.
For someone that mocked the political compass as being too complex in favor of the simple left-right axis, you sure are being a pedantic twit. American media is left of center, not hard leftist. Stop being stupid.
You got it backwards. I make fun of the political compass test for being too simple. I only see the media being liberal in relation to cultural issues not much else. The whole dismantle the government thing you consider to be center right is bizarre and uniquely American that it distorts the whole economic conversation.

Saudi Arabia is a very conservative country but even they are investing a lot of money into building new infrastructure and educating people for more advanced jobs while cutting down on waste.
I simply recognize that American bureaucracy is fucking awful and not a remedy for life's ills. The federal governments role should be limited so that it can focus on the tasks it's supposed to perform - things like diplomacy, justice, defense and making sure the states don't throw up trade barriers between them. Instead, over the centuries, it's just become a jobs program, leeching money from more productive portions of the economy and becoming a drag on all of us. How many millions of people in this country are dependent on me earning money so they can take a small portion of it for themselves? I don't hate this country or necessarily the government, I hate the patronage and the cronyism and the do-nothing jobs.

Like, if you actually care about the plight of the poor you shouldn't be advocating for yet another expansion of Leviathan, with yet another department formed, you should be advocating for a universal basic income system that wipes out 99% of the bureaucracy. That was the Progressive solution to everything - scientific government - and it created this monstrosity.

There are many issues that are outside of the free market's ability to solve and only the government can fix. I would be very interested in seeing how you can have a strong national defense without a well developed education system, and a regulated manufacturing base. I do not see how a healthy justice system can exist with the chronic generational poverty and cultural issues that the free market doesn't address because there is no profit in fixing these things.

Universal Basic Income is an awful idea. I rather have targeted programs addressing things like food insecurity and healthcare than hand over a bunch of money to poor people for them to blow on weed and strippers while they drop out of the workforce. I rather just shoot them if that's the case.

also you guys are clearly dealing with different definitions of 'the media'. major corporate conglomerates and Murdoch and chomsky's 'manufacturing consent' are all critiques of what the Frankfurt school would term 'the culture industry'. that is inherently conservative in an economic sense, I.e. everything is ultimately about profit and lowest common denominator safe returns.

I'm talking about the traditional role of the media, journalism and reporting specifically, in democratic countries. a more apt term may be 'fourth estate'. the educated and literate class and caste of professionals involved in commentary and criticism of public life. that's 'the media' that tea party and rednecks take to task. metropolitan, liberal elites. writers in bow ties from New York or Chicago or Washington. you get the idea. I'm not saying Fox News and the massive media corporations that dominate popular culture are liberal and idealistic. it is obviously crass and venal.
In my experience the only people who bitch about the media are those who don't want their theories or actions exposed to scrutiny.

Apart from that what does the media do that's so harmful? Its not as if they brainwash people when they are free to switch it off or find an outlet which they already agree with.

dude. you joined the military because you didn't know what to do with your life and collected a state salary for a few years for sitting on some base in the desert. you got put through college with public money. the cognitive dissonance here is incredible.

America is not going to become stronger, no matter who we elect. We're royally fucked, I just want Trump to win so he can be the comic relief.

Pretty much the last gasp of white America. 2020 Rubio vs Clinton. Record low GOP turnout. 2024 Chelsea Clinton president. It's her turn too.

I was convinced we'd see Bush v Clinton this election.

Until the first debate.

What the hell happened? Jeb is just such a laughing stock now he'll never run again.

I started to not like the Bush family as I got older, the illegal immigration issue was really the turning point for me to dislike the family. I especially got irked whenever he spoke Spanish to cater to the Mexicans and other hispanics. Quite honestly, I am tired of the same family running for political seats and like the idea of new blood.

I'm sorry but how the fuck does an 'eye for an eye' apply to white Americans? you stupid redneck. what are you taking back or repaying?

I'm curious to know what "eye for an eye" even means in this context. That War Man thinks he's replacing Clown Obama with Clown Trump? Closest I can guess. Forgetting for the moment that that "eye for an eye" evokes Old Testament justice that Christians (even American Christians) were supposed to have abandoned long ago.

Wanting a particular presidential candidate to win "for the lulz" is, if nothing else, pitiable. If there isn't a candidate you like or at least prefer (for a good reason), abstain with your honor intact.

Watching trump fumble through the position because he doesn't know how to politics would be funny. Watching him deport anybody who's not white and non-poor while also bombing the middle east to shit wouldn't be so funny.

I think warman is just thinking of the first part. If we elected Gomer Pyle THEN warman would have a point.

Trump released his economic plan today. More tax cuts, destroy the EPA, get rid of estate taxes.

His plan would cut my taxes. Clinton's would raise mine. Who should I vote for?

U.S. Estate taxes only kick in at $5,500,000. A whooping 0.2% of the country ever pays it.

If you think taxes are the only thing that matters probably Trump. But that would make you as bad as a hoodrat welfare case only voting for Clinton to expand their food stamps.

not if you're a non-resident alien.

With estate taxes come gift taxes.

Why should there ever be a tax on gifts given to friends or family? People already paid taxes on the earnings they made yet the government wants to impose another tax whenever wealth is transferred. gg.
