you ever stop and think to yourself a new item would be so much better if it came in a single-use blister pack so all-encompassing, bulky, and significantly larger than the actual product's dimensions that you risk stabbing yourself (or the item) with the force needed to open it with a knife? don't you just love the ones that turn a normal pair of household scissors when you attempt to cut in from the side?
Everything is stupid.
And you don't even see all the industrial in-process plastic packaging.
So much plastic is basically protecting the finish.
Everyone is precious about the finish on the goods they buy, its human nature, "My new demolition hammer has a slight scuff on it, I demand a replacement, I must have the perfect purchase to feel better about my life even though its stupid" etc

i don't care to let people borrow my good tools. i know how people treat things they don't own, and i don't like finding mystery damage on my stuff. got a power tool back once that the person had left out in the sun for the better part of a year. guess what condition the plastic was in? why is it i can keep a tool decent looking but the minute it leaves my sight it's covered in rust and various unidentifiable oils, paints, epoxies and looks like it was repurposed as the terminator's chewtoy?
don't get me started on tool sets. good while ago, couple half-decent ones were write-offs because a family member snatched for work. must've ran over one with a truck or something. busted drawers, busted latches, missing or broken or obviously swapped pieces. i don't know how you damage that much stuff in so little time. found out a hammer that was 'borrowed' for a quick thing 'at work' was passed around the whole company, and it looked it.
over time, stuff had been going missing out of my bags, and i'd find them 'around,' or the borrower would be like "oh by the way, here." gee, thanks. my dude, just because you see a thing a lot doesn't mean it's yours. respect mah properteh! totally need secret stashes for this stuff. hide it like a prohibition era drunkard hides the liquor.

depends? if i get a new computer component online that shows up with fingerprints on it, i'm going to have questions.Dilbert_X wrote:

the point is, macbeth: now that you're in a house, don't let gerald across the street borrow your framing hammer.
I don't lend tools to anyone including my father, too many bad experiences, also I forget who I lent stuff to - I only lend stuff I don't want back, I've been far too generous in the past and loaned stuff which couldn't be replaced, lucky getting those things back.
Obviously some things need to be in good condition eg computer parts, but a scratch on the back of your TV or scuffs here and there is not life-ending, we seem to be conditioned to believe it is.
If I want something kept in good condition I don't use it, if I use something I'm resigned to it not staying in good condition.
I like having an old car, if it catches another scratch or dent it will not reduce the value or my enjoyment of it.

the tv thing was fine with crts i think, but an lcd with a scratch straight out of the box is gonna have me skeptical about what kind of life the thing had before it came to me. been stung by dead/frozen pixels. guarantees only by dead pixel count are also horrible when there's one right in the middle of your workspace. sometimes companies will take it back anyway, but who wants to go out of their way to RMA stuff. what a chore.
This is what I'm talking about, one or two dead pixels out of over 2 million really does not impact on you in any way, but the perfectionist in everyone wants perfection and if a 1000 litres of embodied gasoline has to get poured down the drain then so be it.
I have multiple floaters in my dominant eye, think how hard that is to tune out by comparison.

well, no. this is one of those aforementioned computer components.
a dead pixel early into a monitor's life may preface it bringing friends. by the time there's like 50 of them popping up in a rapid failure, the warranty's already expired. your monitor's now a dead pixel bar.
a black dot in the middle of a dark game or movie can be overlooked, but a black dot on my white screen workspace is irritating.
let the store or mfg deal with the brand new yet mysteriously scuffed up monitor. stuff should go in refurbished stock.

Just submitted a request to (Ask) This Old House. I think they'll pick me and I'll be the new face of the franchise. That's what Kevin did, he was just on a segment of AToH and they asked him to be the host.
If that made no sense to you, you don't watch PBS or are under the age of 70.
