Pros:

- you get to see everything on the map
- you get to use all the assets ( artillery, UAV, scan )
- you get free points off your team, that is if your team is any good
- teamkills dont count

Cons:

- you won't be able to defend yourself cuz you should always be in the commander screen
- your kills, capping bases dont count for points
- if all your assets are destroyed, you are basically useless
- your points are based off your team's performance, meaning if they suck, no points for you
- it gets boring, unless you like saying Enemy Infantry Spotted

can zoom in and view enemies for your own use

ie finding and sneaking up on enemy commander/snipers etc, so u can knife them without getting spotted.

another advantage: cardrop fun. try and kill as many enemies and teammates as u can, with car drops.

I rather not commanding, it's to boring. Gettting in there and fghting is a lot better. I have come across some good comanders in my time that really make the game fun and are professional at what they do. I don't like commanding.

You don't get the points in game for repairing, healing, resupplying, capping flags etc. but you get them added to your stats...So commander is a pretty powerful position

Of course, if you're a commander wandering around capping flags and killing people, you're not doing your job. Which is bad. Don't be a bad commander, people. You'll make me cry.

I would say that the commander is doing his job if he's able to effectively command and do that at the same time. But that's usually only the case on 16 player servers where the 8th player on a team really does make a difference.

64 players he's better off microing squads though.

If you're a good commander, you can see when your team needs help.

If you're a good commander, you can fight AND use the commander screen.

I do it...And I've almost got 20,000 commander points in 100 hours...

You can be running satellite scans and fighting at the same time? The commander needs to spend a hell of a lot of their time with that stuff, man.  If the server has more than 16 players, your team will almost certainly be better off if you just sit at your uncap and command.

Though hey, to be fair, I don't know you, so maybe you can do that stuff. But, from my experience, most people don't. So everyone who's not a super commander from space, just sit at your uncap. You'll be doing your team a favour.

As I said before...

If you're a good commander, you can see when your team needs help.

Well, it's entirely possible that I've just happened to miss all the good commanders, but most of the ones I see can't use their satellite while they're fighting. Because they're not magic.

Of course, now that I look at it, you mostly play Karkand. Not much need for detailed commander work on Karkand. Commanders can just put down UAVs at the flag the US are attacking, and leave it at that. Doesn't really work like that in most other maps.

Commanders can effectively defend flags/assetts/vehicles whilst commanding as long as you plan ahead..

I quite often mine the vehicle spawns, do a vehicle drop then drive to a spot over looking assets, jump in the gun & command from there.. even if you don't see them coming on scan when your assets get blown you just switch back & mow them down. Then to repair you only drive back over for a few seconds.

However i don't think anyone can really command and use a heli/jet/tank to its full potential!..you will always end up neglecting 1 or the other.

..and yeah it is boring!

Fighting commander = no satellite scan. If you close the commander screen while scanning it will disappear. When the scan has completed and you've waited for red dots to disappear and then spotted them it's time for another scan.

No satellite scan = enemy snipers can roam free.

I agree with superkittenofcuteness that commanding is more of a full-time job with 64 players than with 16 (and 1 players absence makes a difference with fewer players).

Fighting commander only in defensive positions or recovering losed flags...

I quite like playing comm, it's a nice change of pace from grunt-combat time or armour etc. And you can get massive scores if your team is good.
On the downside, if your team are morons and won't defend your cappable mainbase then it's pretty damn annoying. Like on Mashtuur, we always seem to end up playing Switchy Switchy Bases becuase all they will do is attack an enemy flag, not defend our own important ones like Hotel or Hill...
