There are three, maybe four classes that are meant for inf combat: Medics, assault, supports, and in a way spec ops.
A medic beats an assault player. At least, amongst good players, they do. Why? mr. assault dude doesn't have much to say against a headshot, which negates his 'extra armor abilities'. His nade launcher? Again, a quick shot beats that most of the time, and even with its advantages the medics get unlimited health and revives instead. Medics > assault.
Supports are just that, support. Both medic and assault beat it.
Spec ops has the weakest guns out of the three, and without any extra combat abilities is inferior to the other three classes. Sure, he has C4, but that's a minor bonus and nothing you can use in a quick fight.
AT has the DAO, which is powerful in CQC, but just that. Again, can be beaten in CQC by speed, and even though he wins there everywhere else he loses out. No nades either, so inferior to the other four.
Engineer has shotguns and the mp7.. again only useful in CQC. He can lay mines, but from an infantry perspective that's useless, just as his wrench. He has nades, which is his advantage over AT.
Snipers are only truly effective long range.
All of the above is from an infantry only perspective, though. AT is meant to be behind the 'true' infantry classes, destroying tanks. Engineers shouldn't be on foot but in vehicles or backing them up. Spec ops is meant to be sneaky and not be directly engaged. Snipers are supposed to stay far away and not up close. And to be honest, snipers require by far the most skill to use and return the least, and while proving a fun challenge, are not that useful in infantry combat.

Sherman, dark on dark doesn't work.
1.12 had the best balance IMO. Now it's mostly medic and support, with some engies in the tanks and some snipers that usually suck. Any other kits are in choppers or planes.

There is plenty of balance. If the team your playing on only has support and medics, change teams so you don't have all noobs that want a bunch of points. Each kit has its uses, and good teams make use of all kits to win. On pretty much every map, you need all the kits. I would rather go one on one with a medic than an assualt player (as long as both are of equal talent). Maybe you need to change up your game a little.
Kits are used for different aspects of this game. Why should they be completely balanced? That's why the point of this game is to be in squads, not 1 on 1!
A medic confronting a sniper is normally not a good situation for the medic, unless the sniper is on the move.
A sniper confronting a tank is bad thing.
A assault kit confronting a jeep usually spells death, but a jeep confronting an Anti-armor=jeep loses.
