I only use them to cover my butt. I hate the bad rep that us snipers are getting because of the spamming. Your choices seem simple get 3 points for a flag defend, or not get knifed and stay alive longer.

3 pts sounds better to me since you do not lose points for dying. I use them to cover my ass if I am sniping in one spot, but if I am moving around I will spam them. Nothing wrong with that.

Put them on flags in every map. I can hold my own against anyone that tries to get me with any gun.

For a cheap kill I see an high traffic area I throw one there I get kills simpel.
Covering a flank. So they can't get around and behind me easily. Also because I move around so much putting them behind me isn't very useful.

I use them for protecting my ass, and the occasional camping a house on wake on top of it with a support guy spamming the spawn, but thats rare.
I use them to annoy people, run about and put them in really obvious places, so they get frustrated when they spend 5 seconds flying across the level.
I use them to cover my flanks when I'm sniping or as offensive weapons if I'm being run down and don't have the m95. I'm not one to sit still coming from a background of UT and Quake, so often times I don't use them at all.
