I purposely made the title "Deadly U.S. Embassy attack in Syria" so you would get the same impression as I did when I read the headline. What they don't tell you is the three dead people are the ones trying to attack the US Embassy. Another headline reads "3 killed outside U.S. embassy in Syria" http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060912/ap_ … _gunfire_8 .

Is the headlines to these stories deliberately misleading in order to imply a far worse situation? I know technicaly it's accurate but never underestimate the power of a headline. Imagine "Three would be attackers are killed". It sounds much different than "Deadly U.S. Embassy attack in Syria" . I don't know, maybe it's just me .

Just heard about that. According the the Syrian Internal Ministry the 3 killed were the terrorists, not US employees.

And of course they would exaggerate it. Who would buy a newspaper with a boring headline?

Headlines are supposed to sell the newspaper , or make you watch the news....
So dont look away from the fact that headlines are twisted a little bit around.

Don't you think a better headline might be "US Embassy Attack Foilled 3 Terrorists Dead"?

Gives a better picture if you ask me.

Also inspires public confidence, which is what the war on terror should really be about, that's what terrorism is - scaring people. If you stop people being concerned about it you've beaten the terrorists.

AP had a much different picture ^^ Many news outlets pull exactly what comes off the AP line. Of course the headlines are going to vary now and on. CNN is it's own source most of the time.

we have a problem then:

"I glance at the headlines just to kind of get a flavor of what's moving".... "I rarely read the stories" - GW Bush.

What this: "Al Qaeda offshoot suspected in U.S. Embassy attack in Syria"

No, not really. That's hardly the same headline.

lol!

That's exactly the sort of thing I'm against. It sounds like they're trying to make the attack sound as bad as possible (as most media groups tend to, sensationalising sells), but have only succeeded in sounding silly.

Foilled again, they would've gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for those pesky yanks....

The power of a headline.

My local paper "The Tampa Tribune" was "The Mourning After"

Syria knows that a breach of U.S. diplomatic territory will result in Marines being dispatched to protect and/or evacuate our people.
Not in their best interests as they know they couldn't do much to stop us and that would make them look like sissies.

I'd actually take heart from this, the Syrian guards could have easily fled their posts and allowed the embassy to be attacked, but they stayed and fought them off, killing three and capturing a fourth. I see none of you are going to appreciate that.

I've had it. I am a die hard liberal. That doesn't mean I am willing to close my eyes when it comes to foriegn policy. If someone doesn't want to secure the US don't call them a liberal. Just call them what they are, pussies. I take offense to having pussies labeled liberals.
