I searched for this and posted in the "Patch Chatter" forum with no results so I'm gonna post it here since this section gets more traffic:

I just patched to 1.4 with EA downloader with the incremental patch from 1.3 -1.4 and it seemed to install fine.  When I got BF2 loaded up to start ping the servers, 13 servers came up with 0 ping and they were almost full on the list, but there were no players listed below the server listing (which most of you have expirienced before, I'm sure).  I'm getting ready to install the full patch to see if that fixes anything, it just got done downloading as I was typing this.  Also, re-installing isn't an option right now as explained in this post I made yesterday:  http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=44116.

I turned off my firewall and it didn't make a difference.

I installed the full 1.4 patch and nothing changed.

It also takes a bit longer to connect to the account server when I'm logging on.  But I can still see my stats in-game so it connects correctly.  I can also play single player fine with no probs.  But I cant connect to any of the 13 servers it brings up.  It says "unable to connect to server.  Check you network connection(s)."  I was playing with 1.3 fine just last night so I dunno what this patch could have changed as far as my network is concerned.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

This is the proper section for this post ... I'll remove your other post.

(Usually when you call tech support because your computer won't turn on, they will ask "is it plugged in?"  Interestingly, that is the issue with most people.)

So, I'm not trying to insult your intelligence with this next question, but it is usually the problem that most people have:  when you search for servers, do you have the filter boxes properly checked?

Hah, I understand, and I should have included this in my original post;

I have played around with the filters and it does affect how many servers show up, but as long as I have the "same version" box checked (and no other boxes except the three map size boxes), I cant' get over 13 servers to show up.

The only boxes that I have checked is:
RANKED
PUNKBUSTER
S/MAP
M/MAP
L/MAP
Try them and see what happens.
I usually get around 3000 servers.

Unless you have MODS installed then also SAME MOD.

Well if I have NOTHING checked except for the map size boxes (all three, S, M, L), then I can get 51 servers pinged and half of them are red.  I still cant connect to ANY of the other servers too.  And they ALL have a ping of 0.

Edit:  I also tried to delete my profiles as this as helped things in the past.  But didn't this time.

Re-Edit:  Possible breakthrough... I cant seem to play any other online games either!!  This is starting to annoy me severely.  My firewalls (both windows and Symantec) are OFF and I cant ping a damn thing on any game!  WTF??  Someone HELP ME PLEASE!!!

T4rd, one poster in another thread made a comment that this condition can be cleared by unchecking all boxes and then applying the filter.  You should see a ton of servers.

Then go and check the boxes that apply to your needs.

Thanks, OrangeHound.  But I've tried changing the filters in every imaginable configuration and applying them in every order to no avail.  But I just made an edit in my previous post that I cant seem to get online with any of my other games!  FEAR cant connect to any servers (though some ping).  And Half-Life 2 cant connect to any either.  This clearly sounds like a firewall problem yet EVERYTHING is OFF and DISABLED.  It's baffling me and annoying me severely now.  Thanks for the help so far though.

Great!  (sort of)  At least we are getting to the bottom of this.  Try turning off anti-virus also, that has caused problems in the past with others reaching servers.

Well I turned off anti-virus also and it didn't change anything.  Mabye I should plug my PC directly into my modem to see if it's my router?  I've did everything software related that I can think of.  Thanks so far guys.  Keep it coming.

Well, let's see ... the server browser connects to the GameSpy servers, right?   If the server you are directed toward is having problems, then you will experience problems.  So, there is the possibility that things will correct themselves in 24 hours.

I had a similar problem with I believe 1.2 when it came out.  Except my issue was that the servers loaded extremely slow.  I had to un-install the game, after that, remove it from your registry as well.  Once its gone, and nothing of BF2 is left on your machine, re-install with the full version of the patch.  Thats the only thing that fixed mine.

But what about my other games that aren't working online?  I cant get FEAR or Steam to connect to any servers for Half-life 2 DM or Counter Strike.  Wouldn't you think that's related to this problem also?  I dont think they use Gamespy..?

Nobody's ever had a problem with not being able to connect to any game servers on any game before?  I gotta figure this out.  This is rediculous... It's prolly something stupid too.  Like some port blocking somewhere or something..?

Edit:  I even put a DMZ on my router for my PCs IP address so I know there's no port blocking at that layer of the network.

I wish I could change the title of this post now.

Have you done a full pc virus scan. It may be that you have some corupted files. This is extremely weird.
Did you have your anti-virus running while you downloaded the patches? This can cause alot of problems with patches not configuring properly. Wish you luck M8.

What do you want it changed to????

BTW, I've seen many people with a similar problem, but I just haven't seen any solutions short of either (a) wait it out because it is a GameSpy problem or (b) reinstall everything.    But, I doubt (b) would solve the problem since this is an issue between many games.

Can you change it to "I can't ping servers on any game!," or something like that?  Thanks again OrangeHound.

Well after goin to bed and trying again this morning, I still cant ping crap with any game.  I actually think re-installing everything might work, but I dont have any of my sofware with me now.  It's all with my stuff I had shipped from S. Korea .

Oh, and gunnaboy, I just did a full virus scan and it showed up with absolutely nothing.  I did have AV on when I downloaded/installed the patch, but I dont think that'd make all my other games screw up too.  Thanks for the thought though.  Cuz I forgot to scan for spyware/adware too, which I doubt wuuld cause it anyway, but it's good practice.

T4rd, I realize this is happening across games, but I just noticed a similar thread where a guy was having ping problems following a patch, and he said that under "options" the "connection settings" had been mysteriously changed from cable to T1(lan) ... when he selected "cable", the ping problems disappeared.

Still seeing if I can find anything more relavent ...

Sounds like it may be internet related and maybe not game related. How's your ping to other websites? try pinging www.usatoday.com then do a traceroute. The intraweb gods may be angry.
In a comand prompt

Code:

ping www.usatoday.com
tracert www.usatoday.com
Also, have you rebooted the router? Mine fucks up every now and then...

My anti-virus(McAfee) shows my games as PUPs(adware). Once I added them to my trusted list everyone of them worked fine. Sometimes patching can screw up router port settings so if you reset your router or go into the properties you should be able to configure the ports.

Thanks again OrangeHound for changing my title.

I saw the connection settings in BF2 for T1(Lan) and cable too.  It was originally on T1 and I thought that was wrong so I changed it and it still didn't make a difference.

KCD, I am able to ping and traceroute websites fine.  It showed me all 16 hops from my router to usatodays' server and it seemed a normal ping time (64 - 110 ms).  I cant find any other sites I cant ping.  I reset my router, and even took my router off my network and plugged directly to my modem and still no difference made.  So it can't be the router.  I think it has to be Windows/software related.  But I've troubleshot everything I know of in my sofware.  I disabled and made sure all my games were "trusted" applications on my firewall.  I think I'm gonna try to call my ISP and see if they can offer any advice or help.  But keep the helo coming guys, I need all I can get.  Thanks a lot so far though.

What puzzles me here, is that your problems started after the 1.4 incremental patch.  Why the 1.4 patch would  affect other games is a mystery to me, unless these games used the same file.

If I were in your shoes, I might try to do system restore to the condition of my computer before I attempted the 1.3 to 1.4 incremental patch (assuming you had a restore point there).  You can then try the 1.3 version to see if the ping issue is resolved OR try to do the full 1.4 install.

That's true.  Before you try to do any restore points, are you running McAfee?  I can't tell you how many times this software has blocked people from doing routine functions ... and, I've noted that people have sometimes had problems after patching if they run McAfee.

See... I hate windows sooo much right now.  I would try that OrangeHound, but EVERY time I do a system restore, it acts like it works until I get back to my desktop after restarting.  Then it gives me a nice message that reads "No changes have been made to your system" then it show the day I tried to restore it to and I think it says to try to restore to another date.  But no matter the day I try to restore to, it doesn't restore.  I just get the same message no matter what.  What's even funnier is that I can even manually create a restore point right now, try to restore it immediately after creating the restore point, and it STILL gives me that message, LOL.  What garbage.  That would be a great suggestion otherwise though.  Thanks again.

Edit:  I run Symantec Firewall and Anti-Virus.

Symantec can have the same issues as McAfee. They tend to scan everything that is downloaded, trying to weed out bits and pieces. If you are going to do a fresh download diable it and see if that helps.Cheer up, we'll help you get to the bottom of it.
