A normal text editor should work, just save it out as a .dat afterwards and don't convert it to a .txt...

tried notepad, but it is a just a bunch of code i can't make heads or tails of
------------------
so change the file to a .txt then change it up, then turn it back to .dat?

where can i get a text editor?

What game is it?
Then we can understand what code it is written in

Google .DAT File Viewer
Also check for Development tools from the Developer

Uh, guys, it's probably compiled code.  In compiled format rather than textual format.  In order to actually help you, state the name of the game, and what you intend to accomplish by editing it.  If it is not a game that has an editor that can read the files, then you could try using a hex editor.  But YMMV...  The only other savior you might have is if the .dat file is a common type file disguised as a .dat.

Hi..

Jump on google, and do a search for a .dat file editor. Pretty sure there'd be one out there..
