i think the word racism is just abused by ppl of all nationalities, they seem to pull the racism card to get what they want, we are all racist to some degree, mostly not on a personal level but as stereotypes, if ppl werent so touchy it might not be such a delicate subject (not meaning to dismiss serious issues)

as an american living in the UK, i find racism more of a problem in britain than the US by a long shot, I really wish the british would stop using TV as their main source of US culture understanding, I really am getting tired of being asked how many times i've been shot. We're criticised for being insulated and misunderstanding of other cultures, and ya know what? basing your opinions and ideas on TV shows is far worse. Get over it and stop looking for digs on the US through a poor TV show.

When I spent 3 months in New York I got fed up with being asked if I was Australian.

Christ I even got asked if I was German in a cinema in NY. I was wearing an England Rugby shirt ( it said "England" on it ) and I asked the bloke "Can I have two slices of pizza please?" in English with an English accent.

Personally I think TV is a fair representation, if you want to know what New Yorkers are like, just watch married with children and pay particular attention to Al Bundy.
