I dont know how many of your are GTA fans but i know i certainly am i would class it as the best series of games ever made to hit the consoles. I have heard that a new one is coming out next year and was wondering if anybody had any information on it?

Also what would you like to see implemented into the new game? I always hope for online play, having loads of human controlled players and computer controlled players roam the countryside and citys making gangs and making them grow. That would be good fun.

Would this be GTA London?

Rumor - Grand Theft Auto: London for PS3 in Q4 2006

GTA: London (from the older expansion pack)According to an alleged employee of Rockstar North in Glasgow, Scotland, the next installment in the GTA series "will be titled Grand Theft Auto: London and will take place in the Great City of London in 1997."

If true, this sounds suspiciously like Rockstar trying to claim the "Great City" back from Sony's supposed usurpers to the crime-drivin' throne. Also, if you recall, there was a PC expansion to the first GTA in 1999 called Grand Theft Auto: London 1969, so this is either a bad rumor or a likely remake of old material.

We here at Joystiq hear a lot of crazy rumors about games, of course, but we sometimes wonder what to make of anonymous tipsters who claim to work for certain "developers of interest." Read on for the other details we received, and make the decision for yourself.

According to our source (who admittedly doesn't have the most perfect spelling), the "3 Island" system will be replaced by a new "North, East, South, West" system, and the main character will be an ex-gangster starting off in the "rough-and-tumble east end of London." Unlocked regions are to include the North End, South End, and West End, in order. The game is supposed to be about 60% finished, with the graphics and physics engines both completed. The focus is now mainly on the game's story component. The game is currently set to launch with the Playstation 3 in North America and Europe in Q4 2006. With about a year's work already done, the PlayStation 3's "fantastic graphical power" should provide some better horsepower under the hood of the sandbox series.

Grand Theft Auto III-era

Grand Theft Auto III (2001) brought a third-person view to the series, rather than the traditional top-down view of earlier titles. Multiplayer was discarded but GTA III improved in many other areas such as voice-acting and storyline. The game sold very well and became the first blockbuster game in the series, setting the precedent for subsequent GTA titles to be very successful. GTA III also attracted heavy criticism for its violent content, making future games in the GTA series synonymous with violence. Following the success of GTA III, there have been three stand-alone Grand Theft Auto sequels (though all three are technically prequels to GTA III):

    * Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002), set in 1986 in a city inspired in many ways by the movie Scarface (Scarface and TV series Miami Vice. It is a loose spin-off of GTA III with some returning characters shown as their younger selves.

    * Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004), set in 1992 in a fictional state resembling California and Nevada, and features some of the first attempts at series continuity, and included many new RPG elements. Throughout, there are references to previous games, most notably the main character from GTA III and several posters referring to GTA: Vice City. San Andreas received particular attention by the public when a sex minigame that was cut from the game, but left in the game code, was discovered in both the console and PC versions of the game . As a result, GTA: San Andreas was pulled from a number of retail outlets and was re-rated from "M" (Mature) to "AO" (Adults Only) by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB); the first game in the series to be given an AO rating. Rockstar has since released a sanitized version of the game for both PC and Playstation, and reclaimed the "M" rating.

    * Grand Theft Auto Advance (2004), originally intended to be a topdown conversion of GTA III, it ended up becoming its own completely original adventure featuring both new and familiar characters.

    * Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (2005), a Playstation Portable prequel set in 1998 Liberty City.

    * Grand Theft Auto for PSP 2 (2006); a new Grand Theft Auto is scheduled to come out in October 2006 for the Playstation Portable. Details are unknown at the moment.

Rockstar North has also developed the controversial Manhunt video game, which is set in the GTA world (Carcer City, mentioned on one of Grand Theft Auto III's radio stations as a neighboring city)
[edit]

Grand Theft Auto IV-era

    * Grand Theft Auto IV, As of E3 2006 it was announced that GTA IV will be released on Oct. 16th, 2007. It will be released on PS3 and XBOX 360 on the same day, with exclusive downloadable content for XBOX Live marketplace.

The following info may be out of date hints by Rockstar to be released for PlayStation 3 in October 2006 [1], rumoured to be an eight month exclusive, meaning it will be released for other machines sometime during middle to late 2007.

cheers, i hope it isnt set in london though. The amount of games set in london is stupid The getaway put me off that city as a home to games a long time ago.

I liked The Getaway but not the sequel.  For a start, London was fairly accurately represented, which hasn't happened in a game before, as far as I know.  All the buildings were in the right place and the right roads were in the right places and actually playing the game has helped me get to know London as a city and place to visit.  If GTA-IV was set there, it would inevitably encompass more of the city than in The Getaway.

What would be ironic would be that Londoners would get the game last out of all the world, since the PS3 is now scheduled to hit European shops in February 2007.

What other games are set in London besides the "The Getaway" series?  There was that London Racer but that was so shite it could barely be called representative.  Anything else, anyone?

ok true not many are, but i think 3 is enough for me. We need fictional settings, thats the beauty of GTA its entirely fiction. We all know what london is like, what landmarks there are and to be honest it was never fun to really explore it in the getaway as it was all the same in most parts.

I hope that they do do a GTA London. It'd be interesting to see whether they include landmarks and whether they actually make 'London' or whether they just call it GTA:London

'The original creator of Grand Theft Auto and now owner of Real-Time Worlds, David Jones, has announced a publishing deal for his latest online game called All Points Bulletin (APB). Name similarities aside, the massive multiplayer game consists of the player choosing a law breaking gang to be a member of and fighting for control of cities around the world (the cities will be perfect representations of existing real world cities). APB has been signed in South Korea by the publisher Webzen with a release window of 2007; plans to release the game in other regions have not yet been revealed. This sounds like an interesting idea: give the player a gang affiliation and vehicle and let him or her loose on fully recreated cities. It's as close as you are going to get to GTA Online for the moment. Thanks to Eurogamer.net for the heads-up.'

I've been predicted ever since GTA III came out set in liberty city that they'd be doing a London 1969 version in 3D... still, just a rumour at the moment.

OPM: "So how can you top this?"
Sam Houser: "Well, if we didn't have to top it, what would be the point? The beauty of working in videogames is that you're not held back by a fixed medium. If you look at TV, or movies, or music, it's completely static, but with games we get to see the medium evolve. Every five years the nice people at Sony give us new toys to play with, and we get to reinvent the wheel again. With that in mind, though, we don't want to abuse the franchise, and we only want to make stuff when there's a reason for it. This is the trilogy for now (GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas), and we're not in a rush to do the next one. We're looking at the next generation of hardware for sure, and if you think about the enormous difference there is between PS1 and PS2 and then do the calcuations on how much more we'll be able to do if the leap is to the same degree to PS3, well... it's very exciting."

# "[In a recent interview about Table Tennis, a new game from Rockstar,] the Rockstar reps explained that the game was running on RAGE, the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine. This is the graphics technology gamers are to expect from future Rockstar games, including the next GTA."
something about gta 4 will be building on a new concept...

I was never terribly impressed with the GTA series. I liked X-Com, though.

Check out SAINTS ROW on 360 that already has the online feature of making your own gangs, I've always thought Co-op play offline would be good in a GTA game so 2 people can work together to finish missions
If you can't wait for GTA DEFINATELY check out JUST CAUSE released on Friday here's a link
