Why is it that this country (United States) is so into spending so much money into helping those who don't deserve it. Beginning with school and ending with homeless help....

Elementary kids get the idea that they dont have to do ok in school because they can just blow off the subjects in 3 months over summer school, and just have fun the other 9 months of the year
In middle school, the school puts in extra time and effort which costs money, into trying to help the losers that do not want to study into trying to pass their classes
In high school, its a little bit better, if u dont try, u go to summer school, if u dont pass then, u retake it, after 4 years if u dont get it, you're on your own!!!

As for the homeless, or aka bums....technically, they arent homeless, because if they were smart enough to find a place to sleep at night, thats their home. And i understand most of those people out there probably got ripped out of their wealth by their wife or girlfriend, almost always, 99.9999999999% of the time its the reason y. Honestly though, to me, they're just lazy asses that can not find a productive job, at least do what the mexicans are doing, sell fruit, flowers, newspapers, but dont beg for money!!! that just degrades us all, cuz we all know that they're gonna go buy a beer and call it a day, then come out the next day with that stupid face asking for more money with a sign that says "Need money for food".
I saw a guy the other day at the exit of a freeway, and his sign said "Need money for beer"...that made me laugh and for his honesty, i gave him $5 so he could go buy a beer, he earned those $5 by being honest

Anyways, thats just my views on it, if you got offended, then you probably fall into 1 of those 2 categories

It's a good point with the kids but seriously, your taking energetic 6-18 year old kids and putting them in a room and teaching them stuff.. for hours at a time.  blah. what a concept.....

The kids who will shape the world for the next generation will learn because they know that they have to.  The ones that screw around and do drugs will just be pawns in society.. take the jobs pumping gas or flipping burgers.. "natural selection".. survival of the fittest

So your question is: Why bother?

1. It's only humane to give each and every member of a society the same chances of making something of themselves

2. If you've once hit rock bottom, you still might have a chance to get up thanks to a working social/welfare system

3. The youth of.. ..well any day have a low or no concept whatsoever over how a modern society works. This is why 99.9 % of the kids just cruise through school (estimated value - no scientifical data to back up the statement) and only at an older age start realizing the importance of education. This is why the drop-outs should IMO be given a chance to "retro-school" themselves. Only at this point they need government aid so they can pay their bills while educating themselves to be a productive part of the system one day.

Yes, there are and always will be those who blatantly take advantage of the system and have no intention of making anything of themselves, but that is not a good reason to stop welfare for everyone. If you someday reach a point in your life when you've lost everything, I hope you're going to remember yourself expressing your opinion: "Why bother?"

In short, We do this because it's the decent thing to do.  No, these aren't the greatest of people and they probably won't do much or anything for society.  So what? They live in America.  We got where we are by protecting the weak.  We stand out because of our gaurdian like status.  I'll Admit, We push it.  I know a European is gonna read that and get all indignant.  Americans realize they overstep their bounds, but think how much better off the people we've helped are now (...most of Europe sound familiar?) Iraq is a bit of a mess, but it's improving.  It won't be "fixed" until the Iraqis are policing and enforcing themselves, which is what we are teaching them now.

As for children, I think only a rather small percentage are truly goofing off all 9 months for the 3 months in summer school.  At least in my school, 99.5% of last year's 500 strong senior class graduated.  That percentage may be lower in other schools, but for the most part Children need to learn, and are learning.  The stuff you learn in school will help you immensely when you are in "the real world".  Sure, |x+2y|=48z isn't going to come up everyday/at all.  But jobs will look at what you've done and give the better jobs to the better workers, who are usually the better students.

I kind of got off topic, but yes, the world is crowded, polluted, and in some aspects grim.  But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try our hardest to improve the lives of those less fortunate then ourselves.

I was one of those kids who blew off the year and made up for it in summer school. As long as I learned the material what difference does it make when its done? I completed highschool with honors and am currently in college. The money spent on the education system ensures MORE kids get that education at a quality level. Shotgun effect. The more kids with better education means more productive people in society. They got the choice and the chance to learn. If they squander it, so be it, they'll be pumpin gas.

I've never heard of a job that an employer will hire for that doesnt require clean clothes or hygiene. Spend a week with absolutely nothing in hand and see how well you fair. If these guys got screwed by their wives or girlfriends, what makes them not deserve a helping hand. I've met many homeless people who have the will and determination to get themselves out of the bottom, but like all business you need capital. Even $20 bucks extra that's not used for food can get them started. Granted there are ALOT of them that are drugged and liquared up, but not all.

You spend the money and give it a shot. There will always be someone who will use it well. Who knows, they might end up curing cancer. Isn't that worth investing in?

Hmmn.
Sounds like the beginings of a serious debate.
the internet says wrong catagory

But, all in all, we bother because it's wrong to not at least make an attempt to help these people.

Are you talking about that crusty old guy off Mckinnley and the 91 in Corona that holds a sign that says;
why lie, I need a drink? "
If not, the bums are learning that humor gets them more handouts than a sob story.

I'm all for population control on a massive scale, but your suggestions just seem ridicilous to me.

I'm not even gonna start on the kids thing.

You should do well not to compare those homeless people to poor mexicans who have known nothing but poverty all their life. Many of these homeless people were brought up and probably thrived in a society based on wealth, posession and personal standing. The experience of losing all that can destroy many people completely, ripping them from the society they, and you, were once part of (not to mention the effect of the loss or betrayal of a husband or wife in these matters). They are victims of the society and therefore every member in that society shares some responsibility in the person's demise. Some of those homeless people may be just lazy as you say, but undoubtably many of them are not, and you should be thankful that it's not you sitting there like a ravaged wreck. And hope you never will, because it COULD BE YOU one day.
