I don't know how many of you are like me, unfortunate enough to not be able to run the game on any setting other than low.  I have always had trouble flying a jet on low settings because I could never find a jet and stay on its tail when others could easily get on my tail and stay there.

One day I felt like seeing just how good the graphics can be like on medium settings.  My FPS were pitiful, but I realized something really interesting.  For those of you who never played on any settings other than low, the jets actually leave a 200 meter "smoke" trail behind it even at full health.  This explains to me how easy it is for those people on higher settings to be able to find and track a jet easily.

Now, I don't claim to be a great pilot, but I don't have much respect for those people who do fly on these settings and brag about how good they are.  Now, those of you who are a great pilot on low settings, without the gracious smoke trail to follow for a kill, I respect you even more.  I know first hand how hard it can be, and how frustrating it is always feeling that the enemy always knows where you are.

I know I'm going to get bashed for being a "noob" but this is how I feel, and before you do call me that, go try it yourself if you never have before.  It's a real flying challenge.

dude it is skill and just cuz u have a crappy card doesn't mean we pilots aren't good if we fly on med setting and i also use the camera views so i think that what you are saying is just not right.

Why dont you just set your View Distance Scale to %100, it helps ALOT.. and i mean ALOT...

none of the other graphics really affect flying.. The Vapour Trial is nice while following a Jet.. But that doesnt mean you cant find them without em..

I run mostly medium settings a couple on low... I've played on all high settings (when the game came out, my computer ran it smoothly.. now it's different, probably cus my processor is dying, or because of the 1.4 patch, not sure which) I don't usually have a problem keeping up with a jet, I can see the 2 lines on the sides of the jet, that's all you need really..

The ONLY setting that needs to be medium for vapour trails is EFFECTS. Set that to medium, everything else can be LOW. However, having geometry on high and full view distance will help alot. Geometry makes you see things further away.

The vapour trial is one of your primary means of tracking and getting on an enemies' tail, along with the fly by view. Without it I'd have a lot harder time getting on someone's six.

Also, I find jets easier to see on Kubra with med/high lighting. The F18 is a dull grey with lighting low/off, whereas with med/high it's bright shiny white.

Yes, this must be the reason why you are a crappy pilot......... if you could have it on other settings than low, you would be a real Ace, im sure

Thats not strictly true... if your flying level or up and down there is no trail but it becomes visible when banking or if you loop/dive low and fast

Lol, the only time I seem to get no lag (cause of my computer) is when i'm flying. I've recently been playing Oman, getting some time in the F-35.

Personally the vapour trails have only helped occasionally when chasing the MEC planes.

i was flying on daqing recently, and kept knocking the same pilot out of the sky - he was always easy to track in his evasive turns, partly because of the vapour trails. however, when he got behind me i found i could shake him about 80% of the time. upon one death he actually asked me how i was able to stay on him so easily, when i kept managing to twist away from him. i figured that either he didn't have the trails appearing for some reason (i.e. maybe there is a speed-specific envelope that they appear in, and i was always flying faster? j10 after all, and I am always afterburning), or perhaps (the explanation i ended up going with) his evasive turns were just too predictable.

anyway, i dunno about low vs med/high, but the trails certainly help me stay on track when twisitng about... though i am quite an airn00b so no more from me on this subject.

you use everything to your advantage.  I play on HIGH on a big ass LCD, with  joystick and bomb stick/throttle. I like to see a pair of contrails in the sky.  I like to leave my bombs selected so i don't warn other jets with alarms.  I like to lead my targets with the gun and make them smoke a little, and run.  Then I like to switch over to missiles and just chase them without firing a shot until they bail, crash, or commit suicide from the sheer noise of the alarm..  Missles work better raping J-10's before they leave the ground(hopefully)

All you gotta do is put effects on high and maybe dynamic light.
