Right, I was wondering if you could help my friend.
He got a new PC around last Christmas, it was working up until now, and then Bam.

It won't boot properly.

It gets to loading XP, then reboots.
He can boot up in safe mode, but can't go in on normal mode

His PC is as follows (To the best of my memory)

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
1GB of GeIL RAM (I don't know which one exactly, but I could Find out, if you think it's relevant...)
A Sapphire Crossfire Mobo (Again, don't know exactly which one)
X800GTO
500W PSU

Any Ideas?

What's the last driver he installed and when?

When he hits F5 and goes to the "How do you want to boot up?" screen, what happens if he chooses "Last known good ..."?

yea, i would try hitting f5 and try last known good config, if that doesn't work, start in safe mode and scan for viruses/spyware. If all else fails, reinstall windows

ive had this, pain in the arse. got a new comp after it started happening and it took me 9 attemps before it booted up ok. BIOS prob maybe?

Go into safemode.

Backup.

Admin tools > Look at the system log.

Device manager > See any dodgy drivers.

Virus Scan.

System restore?

Try running HJT.

Might think of more later...

run as many dif virus spyware scans in safemode as you can. sounds like someone has a case of the goat porn blues...

apart from any software problems (if it is one and nothing works, he'll have to reformat) might also be a hardware problem. run prime95 (or one of its variants) for as long as possible. also do a thorough check with memtest86+.

Safe mode/Disable Internet connection/virus scan/system restore if possible. When all else fail you need to reinstall OS. Of course if none of that works he has a hardware problem and it seems that it should still be under the manufactures warranty since it has been less than a year.

reboot the entire system and all your problems will go away...get the x64 edition of windows...it rocks, and theres a site that has all the drivers u need, in 64 bit applications

Sounds like another case where a fresh reformat is necessary. Do this only as a last resort though, there are a lot of good methods above to try first.

Not for Long.....

Next thing AMD has is K8L which wont be due till 2008. By then Intel will have a new architecture every two years. What you need to understand is, Intel has a larger design team since it's a larger company. I don't see AMD beating Intel for a while, but I do hope AMD will rise up again.
