Howdy all,

I have recently rebuilt my system and installed BF2 and the latest patches (1.3 & 1.4)

Now when I logon online it takes me straight into a map to play and not to the main menu, I don't know which server or anything. As soon as it loads I have to press escape to go back to the main menu

This never used to happen; I can't find the option to stop this from happening

Happens to me
I solved it by going into Progammes-EA-BF2 or BF2SF-Play BF2.

when you install BF2 you get two shortcuts on your desktop "Play BF2 online now" and just "bf2". Right click> properties, check the shortcut and make sure it goes straight to the BF2.exe and nothing else.

User error, I was using the online button instead of the battlefield 2, I won't forget that in a hurry :-)
