I have just purchased a new hard disk.  Stuck it in my machine, connected up the power and data cables.  Turned on my computer and it's not listed on My Computer.  Looked at device manager and it's there but I can't find any way to activate it or make it work.

Help please!

It might need to be allocated or formated.

This is a common issue with USB, Firewire and SATA drives.

Indeed I had it happen with one of mine. Then when it was recognized it said it was full. But, it wasn't formatted obviously.

it might possibly be that its set as the one the computer runs off of (boot ect.) you need to change it to a slave.
at the front there should be some small connector pins sticking out on two of them should have a cap on them, look around it and it should tell you which ones to put the cap over to change it to slave.
i will porbbaly be wrong though

It's not an "issue", you have to foramt and partition a drive before you can use it.

Also, check you jumpers on the new hard drive.  Make for sure it is set to auto, especially if you have a Dell.

1 - Make the HDD slave (look @ the jumper settings on the back of said HDD)
2 - Connect all the cables to the HDD - dont 4get the power cables too
3 - Power up PC and go in2 BIOS. Check if the PC recognises the new HDD
4 - Exit BIOS and enter XP normally
5 - RMC my computer->manage->disk management->format new HDD. Make HDD an extended primary logical
drive and assign a drive letter to it (prolly "D")
6 - Enjoy new HDD
