i experienced some huge performance differences with using different resolution sizes. in this case, i switched from 1600x1200 to 1280x1024. i used to play cs with 800x600, since i got my x800pro i use 1024x768. now i am curious in other players resolutions

Well, my monitor is capable of 2560x1600 and since that's the native resolution, I'd like to be running in that instead of the 1024x786 (highest in-game option). Unfortunately, every time I change it to something custom, BF2 won't load (or just won't use the new resolutions). It sucks, because my system would easily handle the high resolution.

I have a question what exactly does AA do. I have mine turned off. Is This good or bad?. I run a 6800 GT,1 gig ram , Amd 3500 wincester, at 1024 by 768. All settings high, 100%draw distance and get about 70 - 100 fps.

AA basically renders more detail to get rid of jaggy lines you see. Fences, for example, can look really weird, not at all like a real chain link fence would because there aren't enough pixels to properly draw the fence. AA (or Anti-Aliasing) will basically smooth out the lines. There are a lot of different methods to do this, but the simplest is called supersampling, which is just rendering the scene at a much higher resolution and scaling it down to fit your resolution (i.e.: say you run at 1024x768 with 2x supersampling. The card will render the scene at say 2048x1526 and then scale that down to 1024x768).

I think the reason I turned it off was because I read somewhere it slows down performance. From your description you make it sound like it requires more work of the system (hence less performance). Is their a noticable benefit (wil my gameplay be better with it on) Or does it just make the fences look pretty.

It's good to remember that these "new" 3D accelerators, like X800XT, will not accelerate anything if resolution is below 1024x768. So that's minimum. It's insane to play with 800x600.
Peeps have read from some articles that this gives the best FPS ---> improved accuracy...that's just one of the bullshit bedtime stories.

3D accelerators have been designed to ACCELERATE COMPLEX GRAPHICS. They will not work like they could if you don't STRESS them.
Some say that they play the game with 800x600 because with higher resolutions the game goes chop-chop...another bloody lie...

in general you can expect a large performance hit by enabling AA over having it off. The exeption is you have a current generation card like a GeForce 7800GT and running 1280x1024 with 4xAA. That should be fine but most cards, especially the 6600GT or X800 class of cards can expect a huge performance loss.

hence my 9600 Pro only runs 800x600 with no AA.

Honestly in my opinion I'd enable Anisotropic Filtering before I turned on AA. I hate seeing pixelly textures when I walk up to walls.
