Actually, the virus I'm referring to is harmless and actually good for you!  It's called the 'VOIP' virus!

So I've been playing quite a while and quite often (almost 400 hours now) and since the 1st week of playing or so I've noticed that almost nobody ever uses voice any more.  They did for the first week or so but I guess the 'neat' factor wore off and people just shut up.

Now I haven't used voice for a while because I've had some configuration problems with my on-board sound.  So I got myself a shiney new Sound Blaster X-Fi the other day and decided, damnit, I want to get this mic issue fixed.  So I did that (with the help of my new sound card) and promptly joined my favorite server and started playing.

I joined a squad (5/6 and I made it 6/6) and asked if anyone had a mic.  One person answered back... I was frustrated with this but I guess it was better than NOBODY answering back.  So myself and this guy started working together on voice... 'hold up a sec, lemme blow this C4 1st' or 'watch out on the east, a guy just killed me there'.  Within a couple minutes, another guy joined in... the leader left and somehow I eventually ended up as squad leader.  By the end of that map we were ALL (6/6) talking and strategizing and most importantly cooperating... I was asking for people to spawn on me to cap TV tower (Sharqi)... asking for A.T. spawns because I saw a tank in the distance... 3 guys spawn and take the tank out on the other side of the bridge (Wake Island)... working as a team made all the difference in the world, and VOIP is what made it possible.  We played as a team for the next 2 hours... joined the same squad with each map change... had an awesome night of playing.  It was BY FAR the most fun I have had playing BF2 in my almost 400 hours.

So, people can be a little slow to talk back, but don't let it stop you.  Join a squad and start talking!!  If the people on your squad have half a brain, the VOIP virus will spread and your level of enjoyment will increase greatly!!!  VOIP!!!

VOIP sounds really bad comparing to Ventrilo.
So we use Ventrilo because it has a much better sound quality.

And it isn't fun when there is someone that can't talk english, so you will have a german guy talking all the time and noone understands him..

Reason enough for me to put VOIP off and go on with Ventrilo.

But if it works like you are saying it would be really nice.

Ventrillo and TeamSpeak are great.  But VoIP in-game lets you talk to people in the game with you now.  Not having to wait around for people to join TS or vent just so you can play together.  VoIP has it's advantages!

I always enjoy listening to my German friends online.  Great accents!  And a nice change of pace from the day-to-day grind!

Some of my clan have the VoIP AND Ventrilo working together, but I swear I can't get it to work...

We use Vent as a clan, but I'm more than happy to use VoIP if it would ever work.

I don't use it, even deactivated it... When I'm squad leader it's easier to past commands to my squad or request to the commander with the "T" commands.

And when I want VoIP, I use TS where I can talk with everyone not just my squad leader/commander. Voice quality isn't that great on BF2

I'm all for Vent.  I use Mouse 3 as my talk key, makes it for quick convo.  Only time I get sick of it is when people join channel that either are annoying as hell, mic sucks, or just plain can't understand what they're saying cause they have Star Wars playing in the background...

Yeah, TS and Ventrillo both have more flexibility and better sound quality.  They are vastly superior for clan matches and more organized games.  But if you are just hopping on a random server, you aren't in a clan, you don't have a group of people that play together, etc. VOIP is just more convenient and it's already just there, ready to use.  No extra server to connect to.  No extra coordination with players.  If they are on your squad, they are on VOIP.  Anyway, regardless of the technology you use, USE VOICE!  You won't regret it!

Unfortunately, VoIP may show as enabled on a server...but in fact it doesn't work or isn't enabled at all.  This glitch seems to be hanging around even after the patch.

LSD_Wash (nice name, btw ):
Good original post - I wholeheartedly agree - unless it's late (and people asleep in house with thin walls) I'll often call for VOIP acks when I join a squad - and likeyourself have been in situations where 1 or 2 people respond, but then through starting to use VOIP and thus encourage better squad play have discovered other members of squad also appear to have VOIP - just weren't using it.

However, I've also had sessions where I've joined a VOIP squad, everyone's chatting away, we're working well as a squad, all scoring highly, Best Squad is ours, but then the enemy steps up a gear and all the chatter stops, it becomes about survival, about intuition, about instinct - talk is unnecessary.

Buzerk1:
Try using both - 'T' for primary objectives, VOIP for secondary - say you're in, I think it's Dragon Valley, spawning at the woodshop, or what ever it's called, primary objective is say Attack River Village - but, then on your way past, is it Hill Village? (other end of island  from temple), you spot base under attack - you can take them easily, so then you can quickly announce over VOIP - "Hill Village under attack lets defend on way past!"...

Remember it's the squad leads job to make these kinds of snap in-the-field tactical decisions - and it's squads that are able to successfully carry out the squad leads order that win the battle.

I love VOIP, especially if your with a good SL that's using it. And I love hearing all the different accents. That's always cool.

That has been EXACTLY my experience lately.  VOIP shown enabled, press button and little green thingy comes up...fellow squaddie hears nothing.
