I am willing to spend $3,000 USD.

I am a film maker and need a computer that I can edit my films on using a good program.

I want to be able to play BF2142 at maxed out settings.

Should I get a good Windows machine or a Mac since I am a film maker?

I dont really know how to build a computer but I know people who do.

Well, as you want to make movies I would say go for top of the line Ram + Graphics cards for starters.
1 or 2 X Nvidia 7950GX2 + 4Gig of Crucial Ballistix ram should do nicely on that front

Thats a start :p

What ever you do just make sure you get a C2D . You will really notice a difference when you go to render the movies.

Well, I suppose you know this but if you're going to make 500GB of movies get a humongous hard drive.

Well are there any good editing programs for PC that are as good as Final Cut Pro?

dont waste ur time putting a large internal drive ... get a san (tcp/ip + sata +usb) for large storage (2 drives mirrored) ... for you actual system .. use a modest amount of fast drive space (i.e. 2 10k stata drive striped)

E6700 - $500
X1950XTX -  $420
Asus P5W DH - $270
Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 2GB - $280
Seasonic S12 650W - $160
Seagate 7200.10 320GB SATA2 - $95 (or you could get 2 and RAID them for $190)
Antec P180 - $120
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum - $185
Any DVD/DVD R will work - on average $40
Zalman CNPS9500 - $64

Total comes to around $2100 as I'm sure you can find rebates on some of these.

That leaves you $900 for speakers, monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.

That computer will blow through any current games like they are nothing and I'm sure it would compress video super fast too!

You might want to consider the Asus P5n32 SLI Deluxe SE for the Mobo it has SATA on the fly which will make a difference if you get an external HD. It has an external SATA connection on the back and it would be much faster than a firewire conn.

I've had experience with cutting out films in editing class, and have some idea of what works. Give me awhile and I'll slap together a system or two for you.

As for PC editing programs, I highly recommend Avid. I'm going to tell you right now to steer clear of Premiere Pro, and I don't care if I get an angry e-mail from Adobe because of it. I'm also going to tell you that film editing will take up your space like no other, with all the bits of raw footage. Just making a 7 minute movie is going to cost you up to 100GB, depending on how many takes there are.

I avoid Macs on sheer principle of the proprietary nature of such corporations, but don't entirely discount it as a possibility, if you're going to be editing most of the time.

Till you can get Final Cut Pro for PC, I agree.

Get a mac - make sure it has a core 2 duo.

Or get a PC with a a core 2 duo. Get FAST RAM, that'll really help with video editing. If possible go for a 15K SCSI 320 Hard Drive.

The A8N32 is rubbish, it's the overpriced big brother of the other excellent A8N boards, the expanded PCI-E bus speeds are useless unless you are running something like a quad SLI system. The FX-55 is a crap processor to get on a budget like that, especially when the system will be used primarily for video editing. 150GB Raptors don't perform very well. You didn't even include a DVD-RW which, if the system is to be used for video editing, is an obvious thing to include.

What he needs is a stupidly good CPU. Not an FX-55, which isn't very fast at all. One of the new Xeon chips might be worth a look, if not get an Intel 6700 or 6800. He also wants to be getting 800Mhz RAM, not 400MHz. An AM2 system would be stupid to get, with a budget like that the only real choice is a conroe.

Oh look, here's a benchmark for some video encoding:

https://images.tomshardware.com/2006/08/02/thg_tuning_test/xvid.png

Note how the FX-55 doesn't even make it onto the chart.

if ur editing video u need beefier drives (10k spin, striping, etc), save ur case temp and ditch that extra psu (with an extra don;t you need 2 plugs running from back +extra noise)

I have (I think) decided to go with the Mac. Now tell me, what is bootcamp and is it easy to run so I can play 2142?

Whatever floats your boat. Current Mac is out of my realm of expertise, though.

OK u will need the new X2142 mobo.(it has duel processor configuration) with that said u need two AMD 9900+ its an quad core processor running at 4.2THz. 2TB of DDR900 RAM and the new NVATIA GE-de-on(its NVidia and ati merged and their names in every thing merged) x9721GTX it has 1tb of on board memory and If your up for it U can run cross-SLI and have 4 of these babies in yer computer.. Plasma cooled. THE component's are submerged in this heat destroying compound that doesn't conduct electricity. OH and a 40 000 WATT power supply
one NANO HD DVD DRIVE, Each disk holds 10 TB of data. and last bot not least an 1000 TB (IDK WHAT COMES AFTER A TERRA BYTE) XATA Hard drive @ 100,000 RPM.

There u go the perfect computer.

I hate macs. It hurt to recommend one to you. It does seem by far the best option though.

The new Intel macs are nice and I've even started liking OS X. Get final cut pro best video editing stuff out there, that isn't for silly money anyway.

If you were to get a PC try to get a E6700 and quite a bit of fast RAM. I would SERIOUSLY recommend a SCSI hard drive solution - the drives are SOOOOOOO much faster. Maybe a 15Krpm Seagate Cheetah?
