It's not spyware, what they are telling you is that they use some kind of engine to make the ads in the game local to you. (just got my retail copy if you wanted to know how i know)

If its Spyware which I dont believe anyway, it will be removed as soon as you scan for spyware, just let it checl your BF2142 file.

a: Clear cookies before you play. (probably still be default ads though)

b: someone will figure out the address of the ad server. block it.

It's not that big a problem. It'll happen to all games eventually.

LOL, +1 for you ;-)..

Just a question: won't the analyzing of the coockies and adding the adds into the game cost some CPU percentage that could better be used for something better.. Gaming for instance?
Or won't the advertising-stuff use that much of CPU..
Because it that stuff will cause lag..

(PS: I don't know sh*t about that stuff, so don't "noob" me if this is a retarded question ^_^ )

By the way as I said in another post somewhere:

Isn't it funny that it's the ending of the world, ice is spreading everywhere, an all-out war all over the world has been launched to determine what nation(s) will survive, and still advertising compagnies will find the time and the money to advertise through billboards on a battlefield..
>> Hooray for economy !!!

Could be amusing if your wife/gf happens to do some web surfing before you play.

Imagine, billboards with ad's for feminine products in a war zone.

Exactly. If you are really worried about your "private data", just clear the cookies before playing. (it's kinda lame to clear them every time, but if you want to feel safe...)

Ok, look. After a dice employe joined a disscussion at totalbf2142 he said that IT WOULDNT SEE ANYTHING OTHER THEN WHEN/HOW LONG you look at the ad. im not getting into an argument because if your ignorant well, so be it.
That isn't the issue for me. The issue is they are charging me to look at ads which they are earning money from.

If you want me to be ok with ads, give me a free game that contains ads. I don't expect to pay money and then be subjected to companies trying to hijack my experience with their products.

It's the first step of a very crappy slippery slope, where the last step would be "Congratulations, You Were Promoted! Perhaps For Your Unlock You Would Like To Choose The NIKE SHOES Unlock To Improve Your Speed" and where instead of throwing first aid packs, you pass a gatorade to your teammate.

The Dynamic ads do present a lot of problems, mostly becuase its an open port that people know of and can be hacked while you are otherwise preoccupied.

But why do in game static-ads bother people so much. Are they even going to stop and look at them? Do they just stop playing and stare at the ad? Its not like the billboards in Call of Duty 1 training that require you to look at them.

that's some noob response, how about the fact that people have the option of wanting to play a game with ads vs not buying it?  If people find something wrong you better believe they are going to talk about it.  What's so odd about that?

Hopefully they will have as many "There is a problem with your connection" problems with this software as they do with the actual game. It troubles me that for 4 months we waited on a fix for the 1.3 patch while the developers were hard at work on this new "feature" which I do not recollect anyone asking for.

Think of how the time spent on R&D for these ads could have been better spent improving the game. There has already been a patch released, which would indicate that the final product was incomplete. However it was obviously ready to ship with this "ad-ware/spy-ware".

I am no longer going to support this unfair practice. I can not convince myself to pay for horrid service. Remember, the consumer employs the retailer. In my book EA is fired.

Funny thing is that this paper is coming out when you bought the game and allready wasted 50$ so you really don't have a choice unless you can stand paying that without a problem

All it is is making sure that you're not looking at a European ad in America or whatever.  All it tracks is your general location, and the times you play.

It is NOT spyware.

And besides, Mcdonalds will survive to 2142.  In fact the ads are probably a bonus, because otherwise they'd have to fill up those billboards with generic ads which are unconvincing.

Won't it?

And... why would you be looking at the static ads when you could be doing what you're supposed to be doing?

Yes folks, good old EA is at it again. This time they will be monitoring much more than your game play.

Not to correct you, but this sure as hell isn't the 2nd time..
More like the 10th time..
FFS dude, there's a post about 8 topics down on the spyware stuff!
At least check the last 20 topics before posting anything!

And everybody already knows: it's freakin' lame that EA is putting sh*t like that in game, but hell, we 'll all get used to it and quit moaning about it after a few weeks..
Even if every bit of logic is missing when you're putting billboards with advertisments on a battlefield where nations are fighting THE final war wich will decide what nation will survive..

What are they gonna do about it?

Oh look that guy is doing that and look what he's doing. 5 Hours later, Look what he's doing, and look what he's doing.
Even if they watch us all the time there is no way they gonna bust all of us if we do something bad. And frankly who WOULD wanna watch us? EA is prolly busy with keeping their game up to date and other things. Instead of snooping around in some players private matters.

keh some people just get to worked up for some silly things.

Spyware

Any software that covertly gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Spyware applications are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the Internet. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers. Also called adware.
This is illegal, and EA could be legally responsible for this.  They are installing spyware, there are other ways they can sell ads in game.  I am for sure they are not going to go to a company and say, we have X amount of players playing BF2142 that visit your website, we would like to sell you an ad.  That is not how advertisements work.  It it was done legal, EA would say we have X amount of players and we would like to sell you an ad for Y amount of dollars.

Something else that makes the EULA sound illegal is that the servers may not be located in the US or EU.  Two places where spyware is illegal.  It seems that all of this information will be sent to a server, where EA can not get into legal matters.

Personally, if I purchased BF2142, especially if I pre-ordered it, I would be calling a lawyer.  This is illegal, and EA should be legally responsible.  This type of EULA is also illegal, because before buying the software, you were not told that you have to install spyware on your computer to play the game.
