It seems harmless especially when literally translated but it gets people kicked and makes others go Berserk.

I was walking past a Porno shop and Saw a Poster that said " Horseman "
it was an All male Production DVD. The Guy even looked like me.
The " Stone Cold "  Steve Austin Look.
It was unnerving. So I will be Extra sensitive to the word from now on .

LOL people need to get over it .....interesting fact  the word shit is was an acronym for Store High In Transit and referred to fertiliser that needed to be stored high on the barges that carried it so it wouldnt get wet and rot.

or translated based on regional dialect.

ie

UK vs US

Poofer = homosexual
Fag = Cigarette
female sexual anatomy located below the waist = Fanny (heh, fanny pack.  )

i guess people should just throw the word nigger around like it's going out of style too, huh? it doesn't offend me, so why should i give a damn? put some thought into your cursing if you're going to, if all you have to fall back on is "this is gay" and "omg that's so queer" then no one's probably gives a damn about what you have to say in the first place.

What's the point of using gay as an insult? A gay person is different from a non-gay person, and a Mormon is different than a Christian. I don't hear anyone saying, "Bunny-hopping is so Mormon."

nice. that's a great way of putting it. What I would add though is that its an age thing. I'm sure that 99% of peeps who play games and call everything gay are probably in the 13-21 age bracket. I once asked a bunch of CS players (during a game), why everything was "gay", why they were so obssessed with homosexuals, and one of them just sounded totaly bewildered and said "what ELSE can you say to describe something shithouse?" I said, ummmm, "shithouse", for one...

...and if anyone here likes halflife2, they really have to read this webcomic made with garysmod: http://www.hlcomic.com/view.php?date=2005-08-12  (obviously read it from the start, but this is the page where the main character encounters CS players and how they speak - its totally hilarious)

In Scotland, Gay no longer means homosexual.  it means, weird and different.. Probably unliked.

Hence in Counter strike i will shout "AWM IS GAY" or in BF2 I'll shout "That Artillery was Gay, commander".. you see?

Yeah.  Maybe ideally gay shouldn't be a word that should be thrown around in a derogatory way since some people might be offended, but realistically (in America) it is more synonymous with "stupid", "annoying", "dumb" or whatever.  It just sort of evolved that way.  I guess I say it aloud sometimes without meaning it, but I don't really type it in the game.

If your gay, your gay.  No use compaining about semantics.  To say something is odd or unusual by calling gay makes sense to me.  Where do you think the word "queer" comes from?  Seems to me people get to wrapped up in all the super sensetive p.c. crap.  Most people call things gay these days to describe it in a negative way,  but those same people have no negative feelings toward homosexuals.  Even if they did, who gives a rat's ass.  It just words.  Lighten up.  If someone's talking smack you'll know it.  Until then...relax.

actually i was on a camping trip with a bunch of girls last year...and we started calling things lesbian and dyke.

that rain was fucking dyke.  now my boots are soaked.

this is lesbian, we're out of beer.

it gave us a good laugh and made us realize how pointless it is for people to argue gay.

it is what it is.  its just a word thats now taken on a different context.  homosexuals shouldnt be offended, either should happy or joyous people.  nor should cigarettes or bundles of wood.  just take it as it is, no more, no less.

Someone might be offended?  That's gay.

SHIT ≠ Ship High In Transit = Urban Legend

Shit and F**k both come from the Anglo-Saxon...compare their similarities to the Modern German equivalents.  There would be NO similarities if they came from acronyms.  (For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge as acronym is BS too.)

Gay, but true.  :-P

you were out in the woods with a bunch of chicks and the best story you have to tell is how you talked about how it was raining?

I'm the least homophobic person in the world and while I'm sensitive to racial and homophobic comments (in as much as I don't use them and don't care to be around other people using them), even I use the "ghey" descriptor often. So do a number of gay friends.

I'm not sure how it happened, but it has come to be part of our lexicon, just like "lame" and "sweet". I don't think it is usually said by people with malice and it doesn't seem to be a word like the "N" word, where the only way you can speak it without seeming to be a horrible person is if you're the right skin color (or in this case, actually gay).

Anyway, I also don't use it in settings where it might come across wrong and upset someone that I'm not familiar with. I'll refer to my brother as being really gay when he's over and does something lame. I might use the word once or twice every now and then on a server (but rarely). But that's about it.

The thing you do have to remember, however, is that you can't just expect everyone to take it the way you meant it. How are they to know how you mean it? Hell, even legitimate words aren't used anymore (when was the last time you used or heard the world "niggardly"?). Not because it has any offensive quality to it (it has NOTHING to do with the word you'd think it does), but because it has the potential to offend people who don't know better. LIkewise, how does someone know that you're just a normal person using "gay" as in "ghey" and not some homophobe who would love to bash their skull in?

If I were gay, I would probably not feel comfortable around most people who used the word pejoratively, unless I knew them well enough to know they weren't going to take a bat to me if I looked at them the wrong way.
