I know, there was a .50 cal in Kent on auction a while back too. Point is it takes a lot of bullshit, time, money and patience to get a license, and all that again to actually get a firearm.

Its not that hard really, just join a club, buy a safe and then its paperwork.
There are very few ranges in the UK where you can shoot a 0.50, and theres no real point to it either.

Wouldn't a smaller calibre higher velocity bullet be more accurate at long range?

At a longer range the bullet starts to be affected by wind and other environmental effects. A heavier bullet like a .50 is less affected by these effects.
