well, for recoil and the fact you won't be hunting with it... i would go with the .44 as you can get lighter loads

but i'm sure others would disagree lol

45/70 ftw

my uncle owns the 44, along with a ruger redhawk. he loves the fact that he can carry the same ammo for both.

i was giving krazed a hard time "45/70 ftw"

i haven't shot the 45/70. i have shot the 44, and with the same ammo shot a ruger redhawk in 44. obviously, the rifle was more accurate than the pistol, the redhawk only had a six inch barrel. the marlin is a nice rifle, if i hunted more i would consider it . . .

Floppy, the 44 magnum and 44/40 are two different rounds.

ok...

I read something somewhere about the 44mag having to be a "slower burning" powder than that for pistols?

my uncle hand loads his 44 magnum. he fires a few rounds through both, to see if he can tell the performance difference.

the first time i shot the pistol, i sprained my wrist because i was holding it too tight, expecting the recoil too much.

i bought a 357 magnum shortly after that, and it kicks alot like the 44.

I'm still unsure about how the 45/70 compares to the 44mag

i'm getting a repro 1874 sharps rifle in 45/70 for next deer season

at floppy

one of the people that reloads here would probably be able to answer this better for you..... but pistol powders are faster burning afaik

the .44mag marlin rifle should take it  (although if it explodes and kills you i take no responsibility )

the 45/70 is just much bigger      it's been very accurate when i've used it.... but i can't compare it to the .44 as i've never fired it

Hmm,, I'll consider the 45/70 in case I ever want to move on to hunting, but for now, It's range shooting... waiting for further input on the calibers...

My main gripe with hunting is killing the animal, but I also know that the only major difference between killing something yourself and then eating it or picking something up in the supermarket cooler, is that the animal I kill myself will have had a much better life than that in the cooler...

Not sure tbh, I think the main "targets" here in Denmark are various birds (ducks/geese) or deer...

well you COULD hunt birds with it when they're on the ground

but even if you hit it right in the head it would still splat

yeah it would be a good close range deer/moose gun

I know, it's not exactly optimal for birds...

moose live in sweden, not Denmark

And tbh, I feel that "close range" is more fair to the animal...

Hmm looked at youtube and there seems to be significantly more recoil on the 45/70 than the 44mag

Couldn't find a vid with the same person shooting both though

it depends on the gun and the shooter

you can also get a slip on recoil pad.... or get a gunsmith to install a really good one

to finrays lols, a 1000 pound animal charging you with 6-8 inch spikes on it's head yeah

lol, yeah but the slip on pads you can get can knock 50%+ of felt recoil off

You don't have to use slow powder in the rifle.
You can use pistol loads in the rifle, however you can use higher pressure loads in the rifle as typically they are designed for it
Also you achieve higher velocities in a rifle using a slower burning powder than you would in the pistol.

The aim is to have all the powder thoroughly burnt well before the bullet leaves the barrel, so for a pistol you use a small amount of fast powder, for a rifle a larger amount of slow powder gives more velocity but still burns totally.
You don't want to put the rifle load in the pistol though....

Why not?

I mean most of the powder will burn after the bullet has left the barrel so the extra pressure is simply wasted. The weapon won't blow up right? Just massive flamethrower muzzle flash.
