so i built a pretty decent gaming rig for bf2 ....the problem was that occaisionally it runs really jumpy like you cant walk straight cause it jumps all over the place...i was hoping 2142 wouldnt have this problem ...but it does i havent tried singleplayer yet ...all of my other games run fine just not bf2 or 2142 and this problem only occurs from time to time...tho usually when im doing something really intense ... i have a gig of ram 256 meg 7900 card 3 gig core duo chip plenty of dd space...my brother and i are thinking its just some tweaking i need to do ....so if anyone else had these problems i would really love to know how you got over this...or if anyone has the same vid card and or a similar rig could you tell me any settings or tweaks you may have done to get it running smoothly...... oh yeah and i never really had these problems with the demo..any iunput would help

For one thing, you need another gig.  your video card is using quite a bit of ram, leaving 2142 with little memory to work on.

I agree that another gig of ram would help out greatly, but I don't think that it's accurate to say that the video card is using up ram... the video card has it's own video memory.  It doesn't use system ram, only onboard video does that.

damn ....i have to wait till i get a little more outta debt ...i already spent too much on this thing...  so since i have a big video card i need more ram to run it?

I'm not going to say flat out "wrong" but that doesn't seem 100% accurate to me either. If I remember correctly, there's still some sharing going on there.

well my brother has a less powerfull system than mine with only a gig and his runs fine...either way im prolly going to just get another gig and maybe a better dd i think ive only got a 2mb cache

pretty much your going to have to get another gig of ram

i had only one with a 7800gt and i would get lag...upgraded to 2 and poof lag is gone
try lowering your video settings i know i can run bf2/2142 on high but i chose to run it lower for much better performance because FPS= everything
i run everything on medium pretty much 8xAA 16xAF (configured through the nvidia panel) and get about 70 FPS on 64 player servers with 2 gigs of ram and fast load times
when i ahd 1 gig it would run at about 40 FPS with the same settings

possibly but it's no where near the 256MB amount that the video card has

Well, I will, Clayton_Bigsby - you're flat out wrong. Ok, it works like this - when a game loads any mesh, texture, or other graphics asset, directX will normally attempt to load it into video ram (i.e. the ram on the video card), however if the video ram is full, then it will load that asset into system ram (your main computer ram).

Now, depending on what graphics settings you're using, BF2 will use up anything upto just over 2Gb of ram. Have a guess what most of that is. Yep - graphics assests. I don't have 2142, and haven't tried the demo yet, so I don't know how it's ram usage compares, but from what I saw of the beta, if anything 2142 probably uses a little more.

And I suspest that the lag you're experience is actually due to windows having to swap data in/out to/from the swap-file - so it's not a problem of having too little video-card, per se, but more a problem that stems from having too little ram in total.

OP: In short - get yourself another 1Gb main system ram and it will really help - The smallish amount of ram on your video-card isn't helping, but though video-card ram is faster than main memory ram, there's not really that much difference in it and the low video-card isn't the root cause of the lag.

And here you are right. But you're only right, because it's probably in the region of 5x the ram he has on his video card, not far less.

im guessing your graphics settings are maxed out, if so, get another gig of ram.

Even if it does hurt your pocket, you WILL be satisfied.

ok, Free things to try.  Go in to system proporties / performance options / virtual memory and make sure that your paging file is set to 1.5 X the ammount of memory you have, making initial and max the same.

Reboot

Next you need a better video driver I assume.  Go yo http://www.tweaksrus.com/ and get the current XTreme-G Forceware Driver.
Get drive cleaner Pro !!!  Need this

uninstall the old one, reboot into safe mode run drive cleaner pro and remove the old driver

reboot

cancel the new device found windown when it comes up.

install the new driver from teh exicutable

update to the latest microsoft direct x version.  (that is different that what shipped with the game)

reboot

Also if you have a spare free drive you could use it in your systems for the swap file,   that could help over all performance as well.

Does he run the same settings as you? I suspect he runs lower settings - lower settings=less ram usage=less swapfile usage.

And, just in case you missed the point in either of my earlier posts - definately get the extra 1Gb ram - again, the situation with the HDD is that a faster HDD will improve things a little - because data will swap in/out faster - but just buying the extra 1Gb will remove the need to buy a better HDD.

yer i had same thing with bf2 i only had 1 gig so i got more went to 4 gig lol bit of overkill i know but now i run on all setting high and no lag.

Yes, yes, yes.

you getting the feeling that buying another 1Gb of ram is the way to go, yet?

Now, as I've now seen the bit about the lack of funds, another thing you could do help eleviate things, for free, is to use msconfig:

Go to start->run and type in 'msconfig' (without the quote marks, obviously) and hit enter.
This will bring up a little utility that will allow you to remove any uneeded startup programs.

Go to the Startup tab and go through the list un-ticking anything that isn't vitally nessecary.

If you're not sure what does what, one way to find out is to just untick everything and reboot - if you can still play BF2/2142 fine, the sound works ok, no problems, then stick with that.

If, however you find some things now don't work - sound cards often fall afoul of doing this - just go back into msconfig and put ticks back into the boxes next to anything that looks like it might be needed by your sound card, and so on for any other problems - look for the name or something like the name of the manufacturer or model of what bit is now not working...

Basically - the less you have loading at startup=the more free ram there is for BF2/2142=the less the windows needs to swap to/from HDD=the less the lag...

I bet he needs an extra 1Gb of ram. How much you wanna put on it J][gga?

(btw, OP: I am the person you said you need in the thread title - it's my job to know about these things (as a self-employed games/graphics/physics/web-guru type guy))

his system is up to par... sounds to me like a software issue.... but who knows.... we tell customers that it is easier to solve issues when the PC is infront of us....

anyways thanks guys for the info im just gonna break down prolly next week and get another gig ...i dont h ave the motivation or time to play with all the other tweaks at the moment(what with all the whacking i do) ...and thanks scorpion you pretty much expalined most of the things i was wondering about... spending more money here i come

The rest of his system is probably fine, the graphics card and processor are more than fine. I'm pretty sure it's the 1Gb ram. With that card and processor the rest of the system will easily handle all high settings.

flipgee: what settings do you use?

J][gga: I'll wage +1 karma on it - you wanna match that?

Oh, and you are right about issues being easier to solve with the pc infront of you - of course that's the case...

I played for a good 2-3 months on 1gb of ram and 256mb geforce 5500.  With settings on medium it ran with 0 problems. Never tried 2142 though. I upgraded before it came out. Now I have 2gb of ram and a 6800 with 512mb and run 2142 on all high settings.

I'm curious, what Core 2 Duo chip are you using? Either you're overclocking whatever you have, rounding up your clock speed to the nearest whole number, or you don't have a C2D chip. The highest stock clock speed is 2.93GHz for the Core 2 Extreme X6800.

I'm not trying to be rude, just trying to figure out exactly what you have.
