I totally agree, that would be my second choice.

How about none of the above.

But if you demand a specific answer, I'd say WW1, because they used WW2 era weapons with Civil War era medicine.  You'd be lucky to be killed outright, because being wounded meant a slower more painful death.  If you could be evacuated and given immediate care, your chances were still slim.  But the sheer quantity of casualties in many battles meant that immediate care was often impossible.  It is simply amazing that anyone survived.

But WW2 was no better.  Being wounded often meant a long wait.  I saw "Flags Of Our Fathers" today and it showed how long it could take to get a stretcher to take the wounded down to the beach for evacuation to the hospital ships.  Assuming you managed to get there, the ships may have been overwhelmed with casualties.

I recommend watching "Baghdad ER" because it shows that even with modern medical technology and helicopters for rapid evacuation, many wounded still die before they can get help.

The unspoken wars that go on in Africa. Mass genocides and all. Brutality at its most gruesome. I've heard and/or read about horror stories that went on, and some are still going on, over there. IMO WWii was a walk in the park compare to that, and I know WWii was really harsh.

I fight in a war every day...and Im leet too cos my stats tell me so?

There seem to be two "main" themes to peoples answers. In all war death is a possibility. Most wars are  fought by people who are not in control of the decision making process and are normally fighting for the benefit of others.

1. Injury,Medication and Pain during war.
Lets face it, even today as pointed out above, serious trauma is not fun, and you will possibly die from it.
Any war you fight in you might get eviscerated, blown up, mulched, stabbed, burns, and all sorts of other nasty things by a vast array of different things being used against you.
Pain is not fun...the thing that seperates many of the wars above from the last 50-60 years of war is the use of opiates and serious painkillers. It doesnt matter if its you leg, stomach, ear or privates....if it gets blown or hacked off you hurt..big time. Painkillers are the only thing that will make it feel "slightly" less terrifying.
Painkillers are "relatively" new, and thus if I "HAD TOO" be in a war, I'd like to fight on the side of a Western Country during a major conflict with lots of medics around so when I get hit (and you will) I have SOME chance of survival.
Anything pre WW2 you chances of surviving serious trauma are pretty low. Add pain, amputation and a life without prosthetics..well F$%^^ that. anything in the last 20 years IF I HAD TO BE THERE.

2. Ideology, Morality, Terror and War.
Why we fight, who we fight for and how we experience war are all going to be dependent on the indiciduals perspective at the time. I wouldnt like to fight in the Trojan wars that might have lasted 20 years of very painfull, uncomfortable war. Vikings? Yay, lifespan measured in 3 decades(average), no inteligent conversation and lots of brutality all in the name of conquest?
What about modern wars fought country vs country or even more recent ideology vs capitalism?
I dont want to be scared, terrified, in pain, hungry, un appreciated, for several months/years or for the rest of my short life. I think this would be par for the course in ALL WARS.

I'd like to start and fight in a war against WAR(Redundent statement I know, dont argue semantics).
Lets make war a thing of the past and by studying how descructive it is hopefully come to the realisation that there are better ways to solve disputes thatn by killing and oppression.
Many wars are "said" to be fought for the benefit of a population or country or religion. WHAT THE FUCK gives this group(any group) the right to impose their views on others by force?
There is no right or wrong. These are subjective views and ideas that some people live by. However they are completely subjective, and thus flawed as an excuse for fighting.
Fighting and wars are born of intolerence, and ignorence.
We as a species have got to a point where we could seriously threaten our existence on this planet. We will not wipe out life on this planet, its ego to think we could. However we could kill ourselves, or push ourselves right back into the stone age.
That would be sad. Sad because all of the people who have fought, who have died, who have lost, have all done so....for absolutely nothing.
SO I SAY FUCK WAR. Adn fuck arguing about sides. We need to get to a point where wars can be fought like we are talking here. By comparing arguements, thoughts and feelings. Most people on this thread have had some education which is FAN FUCKING TASTIC. However, we are normally not the ones who fight.
Its normally the little man, wihtout the money or power, fighting for some rich man.
Look at war throughout history, its ALWAYS the people at the top who get the most outta war.

I KNOW some very serious issues have been dealt with through war however the war normally tends to bring an issue up, and its only later generations who actually attempt to solve the issue
EG: American Civil War. Slavery was abolsihed huh? Even though there were still people in slavery right into the 1900s?
Right to vote and be counted as a citizen? Non White people are still fighting this fight today and its normally against the stupid.
I say bring on Genetic modification, make all new babies contain lots of melanin, to make us all dark and thus have a better chance at avoiding skin cancer and a better chance at surviving global warming.
Two biggest causes of war normally are religion and Money. Both of these are mechanisms for controlling large groups of people and dictating the contact between them. Remove both of these things from human life and lets start to look for new ideas on getting along together.

Nuff said, sorry for the rant, but reading the above made me think of this...I am a full armchair general.

Same way that I'd say it.
Seriously though... At least with a rifle you can be killed swiftly.
Who would want to be stabbed with a lance, slashed with a sword, and get arrows hailed upon, with a fairly large chance you'll end by bleeding to death or someone walking up to you while you're down, and stabbing you to death?

That would be the worst way to go IMO.

Yeah, anything before guns. When you see those history programs and how they used to just charge at each other with swords and axes then just hack each other out. That's just crazy.

I think the eastern front in WW2 was really bad. Charging with swords against an enemy with swords isnt as bad as charging without a gun to an enemy with an MG42. Human Wave attacks, i would hate to be in one. Think Iran did that against Iraq.

And Naval Battles, i would hate to drown in the middle of nowhere.

While the trence warfare of WW1 doesn't appeal, I reckon i'd hate to have been involved in the German push into Russia during WW2 - any books that I have read about it are fucking major grim..

looking back - way back - in history, I think I would have hated the fight between homo sapiens and dinosaurs.. that big comet blast might helped them, but a T-rex is still goddamn big, if you and your army (those 3 other guys you're sharing the cave with), barely knows how to start and control a fire..

sure they could throw rocks at them... the result would be the same, as if you as a soldier fire your rifle against a Bradley - you will only motivate the beast!

if I were to look FORWARD in the future and tell you which war I hate to participate in the most, it would be whatever first war we fight against hostile aliens, who have the technology and physical appearance, we normal would credit them.

especially if I were captured alive by them, and exposed to their "interrogation unit".....

I kind of like the whole macho knights theme of the pre guns era
And the uniforms where classy

So im gonna go with WW1. Altho I must say I survived the war in Bosnia and the fact that there is no food, no water, no medicine, no heating when its -20C, no sanitation and no internet, is enough to make you as miserable as you can be. How your gonna die is the least of your concerns.

It'd have to be any war where the only weapons were swords, axes and hammers. Couldn't imagine running into a thousand strong battle and having to manually beat the bejasus out of people until they are all gone.

If you had taken the time to even read my previous posts you would realize the whole reason I said that was to make a point that the Korean war is under-studied and under-appriciated. If the guy I said it to took no offense to it I don't see why you should. It had no direct involvement with you and you were uninformed in your reply to it. Please refer to my foot in your face for more intructions on how to be a complete moron.
And that would be point of my EDIT sentece? Look at your first post, to me, it came across as you being an ass. I took offence because thats the kind of person I am, I love history, and I'm tired of a lot of history not being recognized. A lot of people don't care at all about their family's military history, and it is very sad. And to make it worse it sounded like you were bashing a VC recipient. Read your first post and give it 10 seconds of thought of how it may have come across. I put the EDIT sentence because i missed the 2nd page when i was reading, and after i posted I read the second page and saw that I may have misunderstood you. I really don't see the need for your last sentence.

Well, based on the US wars over the many years, I would have  to say the Civil War or Vietnam.

I wouldnt want to fight in the Civil War because of the lack of technology and medicine.

I wouldnt want to fight in Vietnam because of the physical and mental environment. People went through a lot during the war and some crazy stuff happened. I dont know if I could have handled it...

The Korean War. No one really talks about: "Hey, you remember that Korean War hero?". I never had an essay on: "What was the importance of the Korean War to United States history."

Not so much that I think it wasn't worth talking about, but that simply no one talks about it. It was inbetween the biggest war in history and the most controversial war in U.S. History. People don't remember it...
I would have to say the korean war.  There is a reason the korean war is called "The Forgotten War"
Having spent a year in Korea I can honestly tell you I would rather deal with the other wars then that one.  The terrain is rough, the weather is Never Ideal.   Monsoon season, and if no Monsoon that year get ready to deal with the "Red Wind"  Korean Hemoragic fever is not a strong favorite of mine either.  I met the "Bong" Face first, while carrying an M240B and 600 rounds of 7.62mm, not to mention the normal 75Lbs. "Light Fighter" rucksack and another 20lbs of LBV, Kpot,Buttpack, and CLS Bag.  It broke me off something fierce..
Broken nose, and broke the bi-pod legs on my machine gun.  That was a 20 foot fall during summer when the land is somewhat soft.  Never mind the blistering cold weather.  Todays gear is much lighter then yesturdays, granted theres much much more of it, But the point is the gear of today IE the SPEARS cold weather gear , the gortex socks, the AB Boots (Known as Mickey Mouse Boots) not to mention the lightweight fart sacks.....The scientifically designed to keep you warm up to -20 degree weather , that didnt keep the chill out is much better then what the "Frozen Chosen" had.  Next time you feel like looking up military history look up the battle for Chip Yun ni.  (or spelled something like that)  1 Battalion minus versus a chinese regiment.    the forgotten war is a war im greatfull I did not have to partake in.  Although Iraq is no joke its turning into another Vietnam without the right to return fire.  (this is my second tour in Iraq, the first was weapons free....this one you better have a damn good reason for defending yourself, or face a 15-6 investigation for Escalation of force violations, nevermind the fact YOU saw the guy that detonated the EFP that ripped apart your wingmans Stryker and tossed it 10 feet into the air and killed two personnel onboard and critacally wounded a third.)

guerilla warfare. you cannot find them, they find you with snap ambushes, ied's, rpgs. you are fighting an endless campaign against well motivated insurgents that have no fear of dying and an endless supply of recruits. this against the backdrop of their own country they are fighting for and their families. i found that out in iraq. op telic 3

i would have to say WWI. The conditions in the trenches were appalling.

But most major wars have and would be hell. Vietnam would be another place i would hate to fight in. The dense jungle and heavy rain would have been brutal.
