CPU.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Dual Core Processor, Socket AM2, 2.2Ghz 512KB Cache per core

Memory.
G.Skill F2-6400CL4D-2GBPK 2GB Kit (2x1GB), PC2-6400 (800mhz),
4-4-4-12

wouldnt bottle neck, it probably wouldnt be any better than a single core, maybe a little, but not much, BF2 and 2142 neglect dual cores.

ok so there shouldent really be a problem??. or do you think i should go with a better single core .. something around the price of that type of dual core.? +1 for you both thanks!

Actually, if you want to, you can set the affinity of the cores to different programs. Like for instance you can start BF2 and when you get to the main menu Ctrl+Alt+Del back to desktop. In the task manager go to the processes tab and find the BF2.exe in the list. Right click on BF2.exe and click Affinity. A window should open up displaying the current number of processors you have(it also counts cores as separate processors). Each processor will have a check box next to it and all you have to do is deselect which ever core you don't want it to use and click ok and your done. Just close the task manager and go back to BF2.

That is why you can set the affinity of the cores themselves. On my machine when I play BF2, I set core 1 to play BF2 and core 2 does all the background programs on my computer.

You've got a great processor there, if you want a performance boost upgrade your Gfx card m8 :-)

thank you decon_1!!! +1 for you. but when you set affinity is there a way to save it so you dont have to do it every time ? thanks again everyone that helped!

2 apps that I know of are below.  The second is probably more popular, the first is simpler to use.

Before using these though, you should read this post.  Particularly regarding Fix #4 - Set the Affinity Manually.

There is some very good info on addressing other dual core gaming issues in the rest of that thread as well (but beware, it's 39 pages of posts....)

Good luck

Exactly.  This is nice because you can also set the other core to run things such as Fraps, Xfire, etc., and have that one core running BF2.exe only!  Lucky you.

It depends on the game. It's not so much a question of AMD/Intel as it is a question of how a particular game performs on a dual core chip.  Many games could care less between 1 or 2 cores.  Then again there are some games which HATE dual cores.  There are also games which run better/worse on an AMD/Intel dual core.  Several games currently out perform better on dual core.

Bottom line is you will have to do some searching when you get a new game to find out what (if any) issues it has with dual core.  For example type BF2 dual core into google and you'll find everything you need to know (assuming you don't mind doing some reading...).  On the other hand, what you read may or may not apply to other games on dual core.  You pretty much have to take it on a game by game basis.  What works well for one game may actually degrade performance on another game.

When it comes to dual core gaming one thing is sure....there is no black and white/one step solution.

It's called Kentsfield and it's an Intel quad-core chip.  The fastest (and most expensive) Kentsfield's will be released next month with the somewhat slower but more affordable chips following early next year.

Here is some preliminary "hands-on" info from Anandtech:
