2nd post on the tech forums, but this time it isn't the good kind.

I'm at my buddy's house and he was on msn and he opened a file which contained a virus, and now he has it.  It won't let him activate his firewall and he's not sure he has a fucking anti-virus program (dunce!).

any idea of what this is or how i can get rid of it?

A: He deserves a virus from doing something that fucking stupid.  WTF has he been?  I learned 10 years ago not to do that shit /sigh.

Ok with that out of the way.

DL (If you can) this:

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/P … lorer.html

It called Process Explorer.  It's like Ctrl-alt-del, ecept it show everything that is running.  You can also right click on a process and google it to find out what it is.

Find the virus (Won't be hard, named something funky and doesn't have a company name most likely).  Right click and hit properties.  Find out were it is, highlight it, hit delte to kill it from running, then go delete it.

And stop opening shit on MSN

happened to my friend a couple weeks ago, it wouldnt let him use his anti virus scan so he was forced to system restore. that might help

With any Virus you can never really get rid of it unless you format and do a raw install... your Registry will never be the same.

Dump all info on an external HD and format bro... tell you mate to watch what he opens from now on.

Problem is, These Viruses Also reside in system restore until activated again by a certain action or keystroke. Its always a good idea to have system restore function OFF and backup your HDD.  BAck up all your important info once a week of things you have added. The price of a spindle of 4.7gb dvd's is worth the money for just this reason. Also remember, Alot of these viruses will also attach themselves inside your memory sticks. MAking them reactivate yet again down the road.

Why people are still clicking on links in an IM program is beyond me. With Programs like Avast(free if you register) that have IM scanning in real time, Why wouldnt you have something like it running 24/7 on your computer? Sheesh.  But then again, its things like this that keep me making money fixing peoples computers.
