can you just buy a new processor instead of a brand new computer? i have an Intel Pentium 4 1.5GHz processor, which sucks. i want a new computer, but is it possible just to buy a new processor?

Depends on the socket. Also depends on the rest of the system. If you're on a slow bus, or low AGP, etc it may be worth it to buy new core components (ram, mobo, processor)

It depends on your motherboard.   Go to the home page of you companys motherboard and it will tell you the different chip sets and speeds its compatible with.

I would throw that P4 out the window if I was you,  Im running the AMD 3700+ Claw Hammer,   and it kicks ass!!

With a system that has a 1.5GHz processor I am going to guess on this. The fastest processor you are going to be able to get to might be a 2.4 depending on if your motherboard bios can be flashed to a newer version and also depending on socket and FSB. You will have to look at the manufacter site for your motherboard to see if this can be done.

However at this point if you want any sort of noticable difference a new moutherboard, processor and memory will be a must at this point. Take in account video card and hard drive connection. IDE or SATA.

There is lots to consider so do not just go randomly into this. Time for you to check out some hardware sites.

Tom's Hardware would be a good start.

This is good advice. You are probably better off building a new system. Tom's Hardware is a very good website. the oc club also has some good info in the forums.
At the risk of turning this into another AMD vs Intel debate/war I would recommend going with an AMD 64 bit system.

If your proccessor is that old, you would need to buy a new motherboard, too. I would recommend the AMD FX series of proccessors, because they are made specifically for gamers.

I would recommend any new computer over that pile o' crap you got ryan.  Don't the minimum specs call for a 1.7 GHz?
