God damn, you guys have gotta help me out

Ive had BitTorrent working for ages, ports forwarded and all, but now? Its as slow as shit, especially on the torrents with alot of seeders

Could it be because there are also many more leechers?

Hey torrents are not all illegal. Some games release torrents so that they do not have to pay for the bandwidth.

You can also try to get game demos via news nets. I suggest GrabIt, and Par2 to assist in doing that.

mmm... Torrents are sometimes bitchy.... A few things to remember:

1) If you're behind a firewall, ensure that you open the right ports
2) If you're using an older Torrent client, try to CHANGE the default port. Because of so many torrents containing illeagal software and shit, the default ports are often banned by many ISPs
3) Calculate about 5-7% of your downstream max, and reserve this amount of bandwidth upstream. This ensures that you always have enough bandwidth to send control bits and shit to the guy who is sending info
4) Dont "throttle" your upstream beyond those 5-7%. The less upstream you deliver, the less downstream you recieve. You may get blacklisted for "leeching" some places, and most clients "favor" sending data to people that send data to it !
5) If you're on a passive connection, try going active. This helps a LOT, because you can then connect to allthe other passive connections out there.
6) Do not open too many connections at the same time. Windows and a lot of routers will have problems with too many connections.
7) Try to change your torrent software once in a while. You'll be amazed at how often this works (!)
8) Give it time. Often times the tracker you need to connect to is very busy. Dont expect full speed to start up immediately. It may take several hours before you get to full speed
9) Connect to peers rather than seeds. As per #4, many clients will favor sending data to clients that send data back. You send nothing to seeders, so they will frequently terminate the connection to you or find someone else to send data to, peers you can exchange data with, this means it's easier to get data from peers.
10) Seeders are often "faking", ie, they dont have the data, but are faking it to the tracker(s) to increase the popularity of the torrent. This is often the case with commcerical stuff, porn and crap like that.

yes, in my experience having an unlimited upload can really speed things up. also you tend to have to wait a bit until you torrent reaches full speed. today i was downloading 2 linux distros over utorrent and after 10 min or so i was downloading at 8MB/s (thats megabyte not bit)max and uploading at 10MB/s max, with a average around 3 down / 4.5 up. university is useful for something afterall
