MY current system spec is this:

Asus P5GD1-VM motherboard
XFX 7800 GTX
P4 3.0
2GB (4x512MB matched pairs) PC3200 RAM
X-Fi ExtremeMusic
Viewsonic VX924

As it stands, I can run everything at high but I get lag in Titan fights and on board the Iron Gator.  I also played the Flight Sim X demo and got huge lag with everything on high, so I know something's up.  Done all the spyware/AV checks and nothing's bad, so I'm guessing the bottleneck is the processor.

If I change the processor, I'll have to change the motherboard as I'm not getting another P4.  If I go for Core 2 Duo (the best option), I'm looking at mobo, cpu and memory upgrades being necessary and I'm looking at the best part of £500, which is the arrears on my pay rise and then some.

Am I going wrong somewhere?  Any advice please?

That sounds about right.

A decent mobo: Examples being the Asus P5B or P5WDH - about £120-160. Gigabyte DS3 - £110.
Processor: E6600 - £230 or E6400 - £170
Memory: Good overclockable DDR2 from a reputable but not overpriced manufacturer - example being Geil PC6400C4 2x1Gb - £200. G.Skill is also very good.

So at least £480 if u went for the DS3, 6400 and the Geil Ram. Remember you can seriously overclock Core2Duos, so you can buy the E6600 but get it upto and beyond X6800 speeds. A 50% overclock to 3.6Ghz is fairly easy to achieve with proper cooling on a 6600 (stock 2.4GHz). If you plan on overclocking, add about 20-40 quid for a good heatsink.

Since your UK, Overclockers.co.uk is a good place to start. Either that or Ebuyer.com.

Nope your not going wrong. Best choice you could make. Im trying like hell to come up with the money to Get a conroe rig together right now. But the RAM is going to kill me. Try to get atleast 2 gb of the 800Mhz DDR2 ram if you can. Believe me youll have a Killer system. Oh and definately a 975X Chipset Mobo. Without the voltage increase needed bu a conroe for a good overclock, you dont get the heat output you would have gotten with the old 130 or 90nm chips.  Your lucky if youd have to put that 6600 up to 1.35 volts to get a great overclock out of it. The stock heatsinks seem to be doing a fantastic job. The Intel chips are based on the mobil Tech remember. They run much cooler.

That rig will kick Ass Good luck.

Theres no need to Corsair or OCZ ram, they are generally overpriced. Geil or G.Skill. Cheaper, more overclockable and simply better RAM. More bang for your buck indeed.

Why a 975X chipset - what's the difference between that and the 965?

As a general rule, 975X based mobos have more features and are targeted at the higher end of the market. In most cases they also overclock better. The 975X chipset is targeted at the enthusiast whereas the 965 is more mainstream.

If you want to know more read up the Anandtech Conroe Buying Guide. I've linked you to the page that specifically explains the chipsets. http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2797&p=2
