i'm looking to buy a joystick for bf2 since my desk's running out of space for my mouse to move around but i can't seem to make up my mind on what to get. judging from past posts regarding this topic i conclude that the hot favourites are the Saitek Cyborg Evo and the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, and i've only heard good things about Microsoft Sidewinders.

now my problem is, i've seen a Sidewinder Precision 2 in a cash converters store (some used goods chain we have here) going at SGD$10(US$6) and it sure looks a good deal to me provided its not broken since its from a used goods store, or should i spend more and get a Cyborg or Extreme 3D?

any help's much appreciated. thanks in advance.

I still use my Sidewinder as my main joystick.  The Cyborg Evo would be my second recommendation.  If you have seen my posts on that Logitech stick, you know that I warn people to stay away from them.

Sidewinders are bloody good joysticks. Just make sure the one you're looking at is a Sidewinder 2 with USB and not gameport connector.

Logitech extreme 3d is a great stick, been using mine for 3 years no problems.  There cordless and force feedback ones are nice as well.  Cannot go wrong with Logitech.

I have the Cyborg Evo Wireless and its been pretty good apart from when the batteries run low. The only major complaint i have with it is that i am constantly having to fly with the stick off center.
I have calibrated in windows and all looks good then when i fly a chopper in BF2 the bloody thing won't fly straight or hover without some major inout from me. Apart from this which i think is my stick its a pretty nice one with plenty of buttons and adjustable grip for lefties.

PLZ! read though this.......you need to work out your deadzone's on your stick. Clear the calibrations then download DXTweak.

Feel free to karma meh.

Your going to laugh, but I use a sidewinder force feedback pro from years and years ago..maybe 8 years ago. Still works fine, so I would advise towards a sidewinder product.

PS: I got the joystick in 1998 I just checked, and like I say I still use it today.

WTF why were they discontinued? These sticks are some of the best ones ever made.

i know im sad to as i am in search for a new joystick lol. the closest stick you can get to them now are the force 3d pros. (exactly the same stick just with force feedback) (bf2 doesn't support force feedback so it ain't worth the money)

thats funny, the 3d pro is still available through the logitech website, no mention of being discontinued...and I cant see them discontinuing a mainstream product without having a replacement model, of which there are none in their product list.

Im not sure if I can recommend the 3d pro, yes I have one but as you can see in my ingame calibration guide, its got an overactive twist control and needs the profiler to sort things out.

I have a logitech extreme 3d pro.

It's an alright stick, but don't expect it to last more than a year or so. Mines already starting to wear out, and I got it in February. A few buttons are starting to lose their respond time (have to hit it like 5 times) and the axis' are starting to get a little loose.

But ohwell, I didn't expect much more from a 30$ stick.

The Logitec Extreme 3D Pro was my favorite stick.  I liked the ergonomics, weight, and the number of buttons and their placement.

The reason I don't recommend it is because of the well known problem with their loss of calibration which causes things to roll left/right even when the stick is in a perfectly upright position.  It happened to my stick, my co-workers stick, at least 4 people on a web site where I moderate, and is all over Logitec's own forums.  Logitec would never admit to the problem.  Maybe they recitified it in later releases of the stick, but they didn't want to say anything because that would be admitting to the problem and require them to warranty a lot of joysticks or possibly face a class action lawsuit.

There was a thread on BF2s somewhere about setting deadzones. Find it.

I had this problem, after setting 8% deadzone to all three axis', the problem was gone.

But I shouldn't have to set a deadzone.  It was fine at first, and this happened over time.  I could temporarily correct it by unplugging it and plugging it back to force the system to detect it again, or some times I had to run the calibration, but this was only temporary.

The bottom line is that I shouldn't have to use a third party utility to create deadzones, or continually force recalibration.  Once the stick is calibrated for the first time it should remain that way.  Anything else is a flaw within the stick.
