I haven't quite got the handle on how BF2142 decides which Field Upgrades are available to you.   I know how they are awarded (i.e. through squad bonus points and "filling the bar"), but it's not clear why sometimes you can unlock upgrade weapons and sometimes only accessories.

Here's a list of observations that I've made so far.... please add yours to the list...

1) It appears that "NetBat" helmets are exlcuded from the list.
2) It appears that "Abilities" are blocked beyond Grenades.
3) It seems like you need to unlock at least two items from a "tree" before the weapon upgrade even appears as a potential "Field Upgrade", but you still can't select it. (Do you need the 3rd item in the tree first?)
4) It appears that you need to unlock a "Squad Leader Item" before the next highest one appears as a Field Upgrade.

The way Field Upgrades are issued may be the key to the long term unlock strategy that most people are overlooking.  For example, once you unlock the Upgrade Weapon of a tree or two, it might be better to "spread" the remaining unlocks around the first levels of the other classes.  That way, once Field Upgrades are issued, you can unlock the "upper" accessories.

Any ideas?

Field Upgrades only unlock 1 level above your current. So, if you never unlocked grenades, you can't unlock anything above grenades.

Netbats are an unlockable for field upgrades if you are one level below the netbat unlock.

My approach is I unlock a tree except the last unlock. Those I get with the field upgrades.

You can access your field unlockes at the squad menu...on the right there is a tab that says field unlock. Click it and select the unlock. Don't forget to customize the kit and drag the new unlock to your character.

You can only get field unlocks if your in a squad. If your with the sqaud leader or at the destination that the squad leader has indicated AND you kill someone, you'll get a squad point....there is a bar at the upper left of the hud. when that fills out, you get a squad unlock.

Thanks for your reply, Fire.  Though, I think you are wrong about the Ability unlocks.  I've had the Grenades and Sprint unlocked for awhile and I cannot unlock any other abilities thus far.

Same goes for the NetBats.  I've had first level unlocks for Recon and Assault and was never able to get NetBats with Field Upgrades.

At work now or I'd check. I could have sworn you got the netbats. I've not gone past unlocking grenades on the ability tree.

I've been wrong before and I won't say i'm 100% sure...getting old and encountering those "Senior Moments"

You can't unlock abilities for some reason. And I've had no trouble unlocking NetBats... or anything else.

I wouldn't rely on Field Upgrades to finish out your trees, it can be quite difficult to find a squadleader that places orders, and I'd hate to not have my favorite equipment until I do find a working squad.

I use field unlocks to decide on what Im going to unlock next.
Not for gaming itself.
