I'm running a Ati X850 pro with 2gb ram and p4 2.8 all in high and it runs smoothhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
So get that card.

I just picked up the Nvidia 7800 GS.. real nice... But I still think your buddy needs to upgrade his motherboard first..
