I have recently moved (from Illinois to Arizona) and am now experiencing lag issues on not just BF2, but many other online games. I have talked to my ISP (Cox) and they can't find any problem with my connection. In-game Every... 5 or so seconds 'There is a problem with your connection' pops up and this goes on for the whole game, and usually ends up a disconnect after about 20 minutes of this. I never had this problem before and can't think of anything else to do (except for talk to EA but I think thats out of the question). I have run Spybot S&D, Norton, AD-Aware SE etc. and play with all firewalls disabled but still have these problems. I did some googleing and there was a post that talked about turning off the VOIP/EAX, which I did, but still no effect. What can I do to fix this?

I am running Win XP SP2 with
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.60GHz
2.0GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 6800
(Too lazy to try and find the other things...Those shoulod have the most impact though)

(1)  The most obvious question I have for you is "What changed between Illinois & Philly other than your ISP?"

(2)  Off the top of my head, I would think there might be some antivirus software that's slowing you ... or perhaps a content blocker from your ISP that is checking content (you know, the anti-porn software).

(3)  Check the stickied posts in the BF2-Help section:  http://forums.bf2s.com/viewforum.php?id=66

Edit:  wait, just thought of #4 ... you said "Cox?"

(4)  Is this happening just in the evenings at home (making an assumption that this is an older, shared  system) ... does it happen during the workday (when there is light use on Cox)

/Start/Run then type msconfig

Goto "Services" Check "Hide All Microsoft Services" and uncheck everything you do not need running (Most everything).

Then goto the "Startup" tab and do the same.  Uncheck everything you do not need running.

You have WAY to many processes running.

Well, I don't think there is anything, but if there is how would I turn it off?

I already have... Nothing that I think would help me in there though... Correct me if im wrong.

No it happens at all times.

Also, another thing is, I don't lag at all in single player on any of my games, so this *should* rule out my system (except for spyware/viruses etc.) being the problem? And It also shouldn't be the number of people because I even get this lag on empty servers.

Too many processes indeed. Try shutting down any non-essential ones, following the guide here:

I recommend using the settings under the "SAFE" configuration for starters.

For information about any processes not covered by that guide, Google the full process name(vsmon.exe for example). One of the 1st results should be from the following site:

Using the search results you can decide which processes are necessary for your system. If the result says it's an essential process for software(Windows, anti-virus, firewall) or hardware(video, sound, etc) then leave it running. If it's non-essential then it's your decision whether you want to stop it or not.

Don't go off stopping a whole bunch of processes all at once, that way if something gets screwed up it'll be easier to find out and fix. Stop a few, write them down in a list and reboot. If everything works ok then continue with other processes.

And x2 on keelhauling Norton. Use a good free firewall like ZoneAlarm.

You have more than 50 processes running, some of which are auto-updaters that check for (and download) software updates.

Before I start BF2, I end as many non-crucial processes as I can.  I end up with about 21 running services, which is probably still too many.

I wouldn't take this route, as you'd probably like to use your computer for something other than BF2 at some point.

Just CTRL+ALT+DEL (or take any other route to get to Task Manager), and end any process except for explorer.exe, svchost.exe, alg.exe, winlogon.exe, and a couple others.  Basically if you kill a process and can't run BF2 afterward, start over and remember not to kill whatever process.

Also, go to Start -> Run, type CMD and hit enter.  Enter the following line into the command prompt:
ping -t www.google.com
Watch the response times.  If there's a spike (momentary increase in value) every 5 seconds or so, you'll know it's a communication problem.  Call Cox and complain.

Speaking of Cox... what medium do they use? (DSL, cable, fiber, etc.)
